CalWORKs Work Study

What is CalWORKs Work Study (CWWS)?

Our CalWORKs Work Study Program provides CalWORKs students with on-campus work opportunities, as funding permits. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable, hands-on experience while still participating in an education training program.

What are the benefits of CalWORKs Work Study?

Work study income is exempt from calculation of the CalWORKs cash aid grant and the hours worked in a work study job count toward the weekly CalWORKs participation requirement. Work study opportunities allow students to work up to 20 hours a week when classes are in session.

Also, employers receive 75% reimbursement of the student's wage from the CalWORKs Work Study program.  For students receiving Federal Work Study, this allows a student’s Federal Work Study grant to receive minimal use. Essentially, this “stretches” the grant and, most times, it will last throughout the fiscal year, July 1 through June 30.

To be eligible for the CalWORKs Work Study Program, a student must:

  • Be a current SJDC CalWORKs Program participant
  • Be enrolled at San Joaquin Delta College and be in good standing with the college
  • Be receiving the adult portion of cash aid and provide proof of cash aid from the county (Passport to Services)
  • Be participating in the county’s Welfare-to-Work Program
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units and maintain a 2.0 GPA or better, if being considered for work study in the Fall or Spring semester. During the summer, enrollment is not necessary but a student must plan on attending in the Fall semester
  • Pass the Department of Justice fingerprinting Livescan and complete a TB test through the SJDC Human Resources department process
  • Obtain a work study position on campus
  • Meet with the CalWORKs Work Study Coordinator to begin the CalWORKs Work Study process

What is Federal Work Study (FWS)?

Federal Work Study (FWS) is one of several federal grants offered through Financial Aid & Veterans Services (FAVS). In order to be considered for FWS, students must apply for and be eligible to receive Federal Financial Aid. Federal Work Study offers students the opportunity to earn money through part-time employment.   Visit the FWS page for more information.

To remain eligible for the CalWORKs Work Study Program, a student must:

  • Submit proof of cash aid for each new semester
  • Maintain the minimum 6 units during each Spring and Fall semester
  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or better for each semester
  • Meet with the CalWORKs Academic Advisor and CalWORKs Work Study Coordinator each new semester
  • Maintain contact with Work Study Coordinator regarding the work study position

Am I guaranteed CalWORKs Work Study if I participate in the campus program?
Eligible students are offered work study on a first-come, first-served basis, while funding lasts. Priority is given to current CalWORKs Work Study students. A waiting list is generated for others who meet the requirements listed above and are interested in applying.
