Artist Statement:

All three images in the show were captured during the tumultuous year of 2020 in Sacramento, CA.

Fist of Victory and Intersection were captured at separate Black Lives Matter (BLM) marches. In Fist of Victory the pose and look of the protestor captured my attention. The entire gesture like the one found on the shoes. A face resembling that of Jesus. Sports and religion hold a history in civil rights movements.

I began photographing the BLM movement in December 2014. What began as a demand for police reform also turned into a more comprehensive examination of the complex layers within injustices. Intersection highlights the requests for justice for people impacted by multiple forces.

Not Obliged to Conform was captured at a march organized by Brown Issues. The gathering was a response to the Trump administration’s immigration response. The photo is a hopeful reminder of the youth’s willingness and attentiveness for action versus the status quo. The peripheral glance of the young protestor is also a marker of their youthfulness.
