2023 Student Art Exhibition

Artist Statement:

As an aspiring young artist and college student, I hope to learn and experience all the struggles and motivation a professional art experienced. I want to experience the struggles all well-known artists have experienced in their early careers, all the negative and/or positive emotions they went through to create something so beautiful and eye-catching that it will allow the viewer to distract themselves from reality.

Once I graduate from Delta College and receive my AA degree, I will not transfer to a four-year college or enroll in an art school. Instead, I will continue creating beautiful pieces without dealing with any academic struggles that will weigh me down both physically and emotionally.

The pieces exhibited for the Student Art Exhibition of 2023 consist of a clay bust head created in 2022 and an acrylic painting. For the clay bust head, I used photos of myself to reference. As for the style, I researched different historical looks from the Philippines. And this look, in particular, young Filipino women would paint their faces in white makeup and wear gold attire for when they are about to be married.

The acrylic painting took more planning than the other because it was for an assignment. The directions for the assignment were to create an abstract piece and I had the freedom to do any style of abstract. Because there are different styles of abstraction and most people would think of abstract artists like Jackson Pollock or Mark Rothko, I decided to take a different approach and create a collage piece. When I look at collage-style paintings, there is a lot to look at and a lot to take in. There is no exact composition and sometimes there can be no meaning behind it. That is something I’m very attracted to as an artist because you can create something so random and it will make the viewer question everything but can’t help themselves to look away.
