Women's History Month events celebrate 100 years of women's right to vote
March 01, 2020

STOCKTON — With an election fast approaching and Women's History Month kicking off this week, Delta College will host a series of free events celebrating 100 years and counting of women having the right to vote in the United States.

The month's events include a March 10 visit by Carmen Perez, a co-founder of the Women's March on Washington, and one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People in 2017. The community is invited to all events.

"This 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote is an important celebration, but the committee also wanted to celebrate other forms of political and social activism as well," said History Professor Lynn Hawley, who chairs Delta's Women's History Month Committee. "Ms. Perez' speech and the Rock the Vote campaign will hopefully inspire people to become agents for change in their communities."

Events are as follows:

· A panel discussion led by Hawley and political science professors Joel Blank and Cirian Villavicencio will focus on what happened after women got the right to vote in 1920, the last 20 years of women's voting, their participation in elections, and predictions about the 2020 presidential election. 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 at the Science and Math Building Room 161.

· A "Rock the Vote" event aims to get students engaged in the democratic process and help them register to vote. A free taco lunch will be provided (students only). 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in the College Quad.

· The visit by Carmen Perez gives students and the public a chance to hear from a prominent advocate on the national stage. As executive director of nonprofit The Gathering for Justice, Perez works to promote peace through civil and human rights and to build alternatives to incarceration and violence. 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10 at the Tillie Lewis Theatre.

· Delta's Pride Center will show a film about women who have contributed to LGBTQ+ rights. 1 p.m. Friday, March 11 at Shima 101.

· Delta's Radio and Television students will present mini-documentaries about local women as well as podcasts throughout the month of March. Visit the RTV YouTube page and check back often.
