This is the second iteration of Queer Voices, curated by Jan Marlese. The exhibition presents work that explores LGBTQ+ culture, stories, narratives, social constructs, and intersecting identities. The exhibition is an effort to bring greater awareness and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. Works selected for exhibition are multidisciplinary and include a diverse representation of artists.

San Joaquin Delta College has an amazing LGBTQ+ community, including a staffed, student Pride Center, Student Pride Club, and the Delta College Pride Coalition (DCPC) comprised of faculty, staff, and managers who work on equity policies and projects for the community.

In addition, we are grateful to the high-quality work of professional artists exhibiting at the Horton Gallery. Presenting artwork from outside our local community is important to the expansion of ideas and art education for our students and community at-large. The Horton Gallery is often the first exposure to an art gallery for many of our students. Showing culturally and thematically diverse works of art gives voice to and a sense of belonging for our students.

LGBTQ+ Advocacy through the Arts

Fine Art Printmaking Project

Spring Semester 2026, the Horton Art Gallery Program Coordinator developed an arts advocacy project in partnership with DCPC and Delta Pride Center, LGBTQ+ Advocacy through the Arts. The project was funded in-part by the California Teachers Association’s LGBTQ+ Safety in Schools Grant and Scholarship Program in Honor of Guy DeRosa. Additional funding was provided by Delta College CTA, with major funding provided through Horton Art Gallery program funds, including having the students’ work custom framed by Stockton framer, Jonise Oliva, iFrame.

LGBTQ+ Advocacy through the Arts is an arts advocacy project that engaged a community of art students from the Delta College LGBTQ+ community and allies to participate in a series of three, fine art printmaking workshops instructed by artist-in-residence, Shanna Strauss. Upon completion of the workshops, project participants held several public events that included distributing free printed posters of the original artwork to event attendees, along with presenting a participatory, student-led printmaking demonstration during the Trans Day of Visibility event. The finale for the project is the inclusion of the students’ original fine art prints for the Queer Voices II Exhibition.

Through the workshops, student artists were provided space to learn and express their ideas of advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as articulate intersecting identities of race, ethnicity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. The close workshop setting and shared creative arts process of this diverse group of students developed long-lasting ally friendships to foster safety on Delta College campus through community building.
