Artist Bio

Juliano Barclay Garcia is an artist that currently attends San Joaquin Delta college and works from Stockton California. Being born and raised in our community has nurtured a competitive spirit and a very bold approach to his art that blends elements of fine art, and street art. His work is heavily influenced by the concepts of progress, internal evolution, and is driven by a deep passion for the arts in all forms.

Juliano is in his final year of attending Delta College, where he will be graduating with an Associate degree in Studio Art. During his time here, he has exhibited in shows locally and previously has been exhibited internationally in Just Stop Oil’s 2024 digital Auction, ‘You May Find Yourself…’

Artist Statement

My work, as it exists today, is a reflection of the time I’ve spent practicing and studying various materials. In synchronicity with my study, I am deeply inspired to create work that I feel captures the intense emotions I feel when visualizing new ideas. Currently, I am most interested in the ideas of triumph, pronoia, and redemption. Shifting between study and creation is the ideal gyration for my art to not only thrive but continue to succeed in a society that is growing colder to the artist.

Painting, illustration, and sculpture are the main forms of art that have worked best for capturing the concepts I want to bring into the world. Painting and illustration are art forms that I have been very familiar with my whole life. Growing up surrounded by local artists, I grew accustomed to these mediums, and I have inherited a competitive nature that dwells within every Stocktonian.

My goals with my art are to continue exhibiting not only locally, but around the world. When I have traveled the world with my art, I would like to return home and share what I’ve learned with the communities that nurtured my art. It is for this reason that my art is more to me than just a hobby, it is a purpose that I can’t deny.

As our society evolves, our culture is being neglected. Art in the United States has been facing budget cuts both locally, and nationally. Alongside these financial hurdles, we also face an existential threat in the form of artificial intelligence. It is for these reasons that I have grown a deeper understanding of the idea that art is a form of resistance. I would invite anyone who reads this to begin, and to continue creating, not for the purpose of being ideal but in protest to the threats that we all face as artists.

Work Statement

Almighty Androgyne is a linocut print that is pulling from many mythologies and sources that mention concepts of unified gender in both physicality and spirituality. In this piece both male and female are represented as being a singular divine being known as the Almighty Androgyne. This concept has a historical precedent being mentioned in Plato’s Symposium and is found throughout ancient religions and Jungian psychology. Androgyne in many ways represents an internal truth that we have found scientifically and spiritually. There is a duality to all things and a unity to be found between them.

I felt that this piece was best suited to be displayed horizontally rather than vertically due to the idea of balance that is inherent within the concept of androgyny. At the center of the piece is the unicode symbol that combines both male and female symbols. These concepts were important for me to explore as we address issues facing the queer community. In many ways the queer community in the United States is viewed as a modern evolution of culture. In reality, these communities are an undeniable part of being human, existing in ancient mythology, culture, and psychology.
