Artist Statement
Art has always been my one true outlet. Where words fail, as they often do, art helps to release what is hurting deep inside. As long as I can remember, I've turned to art for expression and solace. Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning. I try to pull myself out, but all I can do is sink deeper into the abyss while my lungs fill with water. As I feel myself fading, a spark emerges. Something to keep me going during those hard times. I pick up a pencil, a pen, or a brush, and I let it all go. The sadness, the anger, the fear, I pour my very soul into my canvas. I sit for hours and just let everything seep out until I feel it’s time to stop.
Art is my saving grace and without it, I don’t know if I’d be here, roaming the earth and seeing the beauty it can hold. Every swipe of paint, every pencil mark, every object sculpted out of nothing, is proof that I was ever here to begin with. I think my reason for living is to create; it’s the one thing that feels right. I wouldn’t be who I am without art.
As a person of Mexican/Latino descent, religion has always played a huge part in how we are raised and how we live our lives. I was raised catholic at a young age, and as was the majority of my family. Religion is engrained into our daily lives whether we acknowledge it or not. If something good happens “Gloria a Dios”, if something bad happens, “Es porque Dios no lo queria”. Everything is “Si dios lo permite” or “Que Dios te bendiga”.
But as soon as something doesn’t fit within their set rules of what is right in the eyes of God, suddenly its, “Eso es del Diablo”, “Es porqueria”, “Dios te va castigar al infierno”. The same people who preach nothing, but love and hope and warmth become the most hateful and cold and cruel people. Love is something so beautiful and natural, but why is it that only the select few can have the right to experience and give it?
Love is love despite who you are, what you look like, and where you come from. Nothing will change that. So why do we try to limit who is allowed to love, and who they love? To love is not a sin, so why must we burn? Are we not all God’s creation?
