Delta College Superintendent/President Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson and the Delta College Board of Trustees issued the following statement:

We know that the presence of federal immigration agents in a Delta College parking lot today has caused fear and anxiety for many in our community.

This is a situation we had hoped would never occur, but one we knew was possible and have been preparing for. We want to share what we know about today's events and the steps we are taking to support and protect our campus community.

Earlier today, Delta College police were patrolling the Budd parking lots and encountered a single law enforcement vehicle driving out of the parking lot. Delta police made contact with two individuals who confirmed that they were federal immigration enforcement agents.

Upon receiving that confirmation, we activated our communications protocol, notifying the campus community through text messages, email, the Delta College website, and social media.

Although the agents indicated that they were not conducting immigration enforcement activities on campus, it was essential that our students and employees be informed of their presence. The agents immediately left the campus.

Given the understandable concerns surrounding today's events, we are taking the following additional steps:

  • We are immediately posting signs in parking lots advising that College property may not be used for immigration enforcement staging areas, processing locations, or any related operations.
  • Additional “Know Your Rights” red cards are being printed and distributed within every building.
  • Faculty are encouraged to show understanding and flexibility toward students who may feel unsafe or uncomfortable coming to campus.

To our students and their families, we want you to know that your safety, well-being, and sense of belonging at Delta College matter deeply to us.

As the Board of Trustees has reaffirmed, Delta College “acknowledges its responsibility to stand as an unapologetic ally, providing resources, advocacy, and protections for its immigrant students and families.”

Every student deserves the opportunity to pursue an education without fear. We stand firmly with all members of our campus community who feel vulnerable during this difficult time.

We will continue to monitor for immigration enforcement activity on campus, take appropriate steps to protect and support our students, and keep our campus community informed.
