Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas.

Delta College Professor and Counselor

Umoja at San Joaquin Delta College

Umoja is designed to increase the matriculation, retention, and graduation rates of students of African descent.  Exclusive, it is not. Students from a diverse, wide-range of varied backgrounds are participants in the program. The overall goal is to help students progress toward their success.  By having faculty and counselors that are culturally competent, our students are equipped with support to navigate the barriers that have historically impacted African American students in educational settings. Umoja is a family, in which we pour into one another and care for each other as we learn to navigate college and higher education.
