ExCEL Internship Program

For college students, what could be better than getting hands-on experience in their chosen fields – and a paycheck at the same time?

That’s the goal of the Experience, Career Exploration, & Learning (ExCEL) Program. With financial support from both Delta College and San Joaquin County, this program aims to provide job training and financial support for Delta students while also helping community and industry partners.

If you’re a student who would like a paid internship, or if you’re an employer interested in obtaining student interns, please read on for additional details.

How the ExCEL Internship Progam works:

Delta College will:

  • Provide funding to pay students’ wages
    Cover liability
  • Help connect students with employers, with the College's Workforce Development Center serving as centralized hub for employer partnerships and networking for career services
  • Provide employer assistance in developing job descriptions for internships and in developing objectives for student learning
  • Assist students with career readiness and job development

Employers will:

  • Create 12-week internship opportunities in partnership with the Workforce Development Center.
  • Assign tasks and projects and offer direct and close supervision of students
  • Provide equipment, materials, and other resources to help students grow in their experience and understanding
  • Understand that a student intern does not replace or displace any employee of the business
  • We ask employers to strongly consider donating an amount equal to 25 percent of interns’ salaries to the Delta College Foundation, ensuring this effort will carry forward into the future

Students will:

  • Commit to a 12-week internship with the intent of gaining work experience related to their field of study
  • Understand that this is an educational opportunity with no guarantee or expectation of employment
  • Work 20 hours a week and be paid approximately $20 an hour
  • Maintain a regular internship schedule and obey the policies, rules and regulations of the employer
  • Demonstrate honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, and a willingness to learn.
