Biography
Tyler Quintin is a current long-term Artist in Residence at the Kansas City Clay Guild (Kansas City, MO). Prior to this, he completed long-term residencies at Red Lodge Clay Center (Red Lodge, MT), the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (Gatlinburg, TN), the Morean Center for Clay (St. Petersburg, FL), and a short-term residency at the Haystack Mountain School of Craft (Deer Isle, ME). Tyler received a BFA from Washburn University in 2016 on a full tuition merit scholarship.
This opportunity afforded him the facilities to explore work across a variety of mediums, which eventually led to a transition into pursuing ceramics. Tyler was a 2024 Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist and his work has been exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions. His work is featured in the permanent collections of the Mulvane Art Museum (Topeka, KS), the San Angelo Museum of Art (San Angelo, TX), and the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
Artist Statement
My work explores identity through ceramics, reflecting on heritage, queerness, and the digital spaces that shape community. As a gay Korean American raised within an American cultural framework, I often occupy an in-between state, searching for belonging while acknowledging what feels fragmented or incomplete.
Through my Rendering and Idle Thoughts series, I use recurring motifs of wireframes, clouds, and animal avatars to bridge heritage and queerness, the digital and the material. Rendering references Korean ceramics, mythology, and online avatars through partially unfinished forms that reflect an understanding shaped by research and online communities rather than lived experience. Idle Thoughts embraces intuition, transforming cloud motifs into figures and vessels that emerge through making. My sculptures remain sites of becoming, where fragments converge, dissolve, and reform, inviting viewers to see incompleteness not as absence, but as possibility.
