Biography
My work explores the vulnerability and susceptibility of children. Children can be born into poverty, war, abuse, or neglect. The works have zippers that appear secure, but with one tug, the internal contents can come spilling out. Zippers show how fragile children are, and symbolize how they are vessels that can be accessed and filled. We fill children with hopes and dreams, but also our fears, hatreds, and insecurities. The damaged surface speaks to the innocence lost by our experience.
When as a child, growing up in Maryland snow fall was a big deal. It happened so infrequently that when it did snow more than 3 inches, school would be canceled. These days were magical gifts that meant an unplanned day of freedom playing outside. “Snowday” seeks to capture the whimsical feeling of those lost magical times. Today when snow days occur, children are forced to log in and attend school virtually. My piece tries to capture the feeling of freedom of that unexpected day off.
