Biography
Sandy Frank is an accomplished artist with over 35 years of experience in sculpting and drawing the human form. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including prestigious venues such as the Openings NY and the CATO Institute. Sandy holds a BA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University and a BFA from the University of San Francisco. She has enriched her skills through workshops with renowned sculptors and has extensive teaching experience, including over 12 years as an anatomy professor at the Academy of Art University. Presently Frank teaches for a non-profit that provides quality art instruction at low cost.
Artist Statement
Sandy Frank’s new series American Portrait confronts the uncomfortable truths of contemporary American society through the intimate lens of ceramic sculpture. This body of work creates visceral "portraits" that examine the intersections of race, gender, religion, and violence—the forces that shape what it means to be American today while revealing the stark disparities in our collective experience.
Through American Portrait viewers are invited to sit with discomfort, to witness truths we often choose to ignore, and to consider how our individual and collective actions either perpetuate or challenge the systems that create such profound inequity. These works are not merely representations but calls to conscience, demanding we examine our complicity and our capacity for change in the ongoing struggle to fulfill America's unfulfilled promises of justice and equality for all.
Warrior explores the exhausting reality of existing as a woman in American society. The figure, adorned with war paint-like makeup and connected to bullets by red thread, embodies the daily ammunition required to navigate a world that consistently undervalues women's voices and contributions. The steel pole and weathered wood base ground this contemporary struggle in historical patterns of oppression that demand transformation.
Greed Maquette, a smaller version of a larger-than-life piece in the American Portrait series represents the fear pattern so prevalent in America found in the money grab of people in power or the behavior of hoarders whereby the acquisitions of more are never enough to fill the empty hole from the feeling of lack.
Classically trained, Frank uses live models to continue to find ways to keep her work fresh. Frank seeks to create beauty with intrigue so the viewer will wonder and want to look again.
