Biography
Originally from Missouri, Kate Nelson received her MFA in Ceramics in 2005 from Texas Woman’s University. She has taught ceramics several art centers, community colleges, and universities, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and the rich history of ceramics providing students with the foundation to find inspiration and create unique well-made works.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and she is in private collections in New York, California, Poland and England. Currently Kate resides in Austin, Texas where she maintains her ceramic studio, Lucky Girl Ceramics, working on sculptural works and hand-crafted tiki mugs.
Artist Statement
I explore the complexities of interpersonal relationships; specifically, the spatial and supposed interaction between two or more persons caught in a single moment of time. Through the process of breaking down and deconstructing the figure into smaller more intimate aspects of a bodies posture the emphasis is redirected to the non-descript area between, creating a permanent shifting state of tension.
