Biography
Betsy Wild is a ceramic sculptor based in Florida. Her work explores the unseen forces that shape us through expressive animal forms charged with movement and energy. Beginning with dynamic gesture, she develops each sculpture into a balance of raw vitality and refined detail, capturing moments suspended between action and stillness. While her visual language has evolved—from symbolic narratives to revealing the transformation of the clay itself—her work has consistently explored desire, fear, resilience, longing, and the momentum that carries us through change.
Artist Statement
Movement is the foundation of my work. I use animals not to represent nature, but to embody the invisible forces that drive us. Each sculpture is an attempt to capture energy at its peak—that fleeting instant where tension, emotion, and motion become inseparable.
Hunted captures a silver fox suspended in pursuit of a single perfect cherry. The fox becomes a portrait of instinct, ambition, and relentless pursuit, while the cherry symbolizes the ideals we chase desire, fulfillment, perfection, or success. Rather than depicting the outcome, the sculpture lingers in the moment before contact, where possibility is still alive and longing is often more powerful than possession.
Although my current work reveals the physical transformation of clay itself, the core of my practice remains unchanged. Whether through symbolic narratives or the visible process of making, I seek to give form to invisible experiences through movement, gesture, and energy—creating sculptures that invite viewers to discover their own stories within them.
