Biography
In kindergarten, Amber Aguirre created her first ceramic piece. From that moment she was captivated by clay. In second grade after winning a poster contest, she declared to her parents that she was going to become an artist.
She went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree from San Francisco State University, and a California teaching credential. Aguirre taught ceramics in the public-school system before moving to Hawaii in 2001 to pursue her art full-time.
Her work is deeply influenced by personal experiences. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Aguirre grew up with an acute awareness of injustice and discrimination. Because of this, her work often addresses topics such as war, racism, and social inequality.
Today, more than 50 years after making that first ashtray, Amber Aguirre is represented by top galleries in the field of ceramics, with her work exhibited and collected internationally
Artist Statement
My work is primarily narrative, and it explores the "human condition" using anthropomorphic figures. Throughout history artists have often been the critics of society and I see that as a sacred calling in my work. As a child of a Holocaust survivor and an amputee, I am compelled to address social and political commentary in my work. It is my way to contribute to changing the world for the better and to fight against discrimination.
I combine humor with an undercurrent of conflict to view the foibles of humanity. Both humor and gravity can be addressed by the same technique of presenting the issue in a way that has the viewer stop and be thoughtful in more depth.
