About Speech Language Pathology Assistant

Helping others find their voice is more than a job. It is a meaningful way to change lives. At Delta College, our Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) program prepares you to support children and adults with communication disorders in educational and healthcare settings.

With an SLPA associate degree, you'll be eligible for California licensure and national certification, putting you on the path to a stable, rewarding career.  Speech-language pathology assistants are in high demand across the Central Valley and Bay Area regions, especially in schools and clinics.

You'll gain hands-on experience in real-world environments, including the Delta College Child Development Center, local schools, and clinics. Your final semester includes a 15-week supervised internship.

Speech Language Pathology Assistant, AS

Upon successful completion of the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Associate in Science degree, the graduate is able to apply for licensure with the State of California. A licensed Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) works under the direction of a supervising Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) and demonstrates skills, knowledge and training to practice in a variety of settings within the parameters of the SLPA scope of practice. A licensed SLPA may work with infants, children, adults and seniors in educational, clinical and medical settings. Limitations on reimbursement for services provide by SLPAs from potential third-party insurers, may affect employment opportunities in certain settings. The graduate will be able to conduct screenings for speech, language and hearing disorders without interpretation, administer treatment as prescribed by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist and assist with clinical documentation.

Speech Language Pathology Assistant Advanced Placement Certificate of Achievement

Students who wish to complete this certificate must have completed an undergraduate degree in speech language pathology/communication sciences and disorders. All others must complete the SLPA AS degree.
