Lilia Becerra

Lilia Becerra-Quintor has a Master's Degree in English with an emphasis in writing, reading, and linguistics and a Bachelor's Degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) with a minor in Latin American Studies both from the University of the Pacific.  She has been teaching ESL and composition for over ten years and taught reading for a number of years.  During the 1988/1989 school year, she was the coordinator of the ESL program while the coordinator was on sabbatical.  In the ESL program, she has taught English 180, 80, 81,70B, and 84.  In the English program, she has taught English 70a-c, English 87, 79, 71, and 1A.  Also, during the 1996-1997 school year, she was the Acting Director/Coordinator of the Tutor Center.  That year she also taught English 32A-Tutor Training.  Lilia worked with the EOPS counselors in the Success Within Reach Program for a number of years.

 

 


 

Jane Unaiki Burns

A Maori from New Zealand, Jane Burns graduated from Otago University, NZ, with a B.A. and graduate Diploma in Anthropology.  Earning her M.Ed. and teaching credential from the University of the Pacific, she joined the faculty of Delta College in 1978 and further received a graduate Reading Specialist Credential and a Language Development Certificate.  Her strongest interests have always been in the teaching of writing to ESL students.  By the mid-eighties, Jane Burns and Martha Rice had established the ESL writing program, English 70A, B, and C using their co-authored text, Thinking / Writing.  Jane Burns served as ESL coordinator for more than 10 years, has taught all aspects of the ESL program, written manuals for use in the ESL program and continues to assist in developing curriculum and testing procedures for assessment.

 

 


 

Dr. Marcos R. Contreras

Dr. Contreras is an immigrant from Chile, who learned his first words of English while working upon his arrival in New York City. Today, he holds a doctorate degree in International Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco where he also earned his M.A. and B.A. degrees.  In addition, he holds an A.A. degree from Laney College in Oakland, California and a B.S. from the Universidad Technica del Estado, Chile, South America. Dr. Contreras has twenty seven years of experience in community colleges including ESL instructor, educational workshops and seminars instructor at several colleges and universities, curriculum development specialist, dean of instruction, and program review and approval specialist at the California Community College Chancellor's Office. Dr. Contreras joined San Joaquin Delta College in July of 1988.

Kathleen Macias is a native of Stockton and a graduate of San Joaquin Delta College.  She received her B.A. in Liberal Studies and a M.A. in Education from the University of the Pacific.  She also received a M. A. from the University of San Francisco in Counseling/Psychology.  She has been an instructor for over 20 years. She taught ESL for Lincoln Unified and Lodi Adult School prior to becoming an instructor for San Joaquin Delta College.  She is currently completing her Doctorate at the University of the Pacific.

Mark Slakey

Mark Slakey earned his B.A. and M.A. in English and Teaching English as a Second Language at California State University, Sacramento.  Since 1988, Mark has taught at Delta College, where he has also served as Academic Senator and ESL Coordinator.  Mark has also taught English at CSU Sacramento, Tunghai University in Taiwan, Sacramento City College, Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, and UC Davis Extension.  In addition, he has conducted numerous business writing seminars at corporations and governmental departments throughout the Sacramento Valley.  He is currently working on his PhD through the University of Wales, Bangor. 


  



 

Farida Smyth

Farida Smyth grew up on the island of Java, Indonesia.  She attended the University of the Pacific in Stockton, where she received her B.A. and M.A. in Inter-American Studies with a major in English as a Second Language.  Farida is fascinated with languages and has taken Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch, German and American Sign language classes.  Farida has taught at Delta College since 1981.  She served as Writing and ESL Coordinator for a few years and has been in charge of the ESL Placement Testing for more than 10 years.  Farida loves music and has incorporated many of her favorite songs into oral laboratory lessons.
