The English Department prepares you to meet the literacy challenges of the 21st Century. The department is charged with fulfilling the community college mission by nurturing the reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities of the citizens of our geographically large and demographically diverse district.

Specific course sequences assist you in achieving their educational goals. The English 78 and 87 series enables basic skills learners to acquire language proficiency guaranteeing their participation in the economic and civic life of our valley. The English 79 and 1A series trains certificate and Associate degree candidates in the literacy skills demanded by the professions they are entering. The department's English 1A, 1B, and 1D courses along with literature courses prepare students for successful transfer to four-year institutions.

In addition to emphasizing the ability to reason soundly, courses within each sequence encourage awareness of the richness of human diversity within our district.
