Learning Disabilities FAQs

Q: How long does it take to complete the LD evaluation?

A: A student can expect to schedule five to eight hours to complete the psychological assessment. The entire evaluation process takes 4-6 weeks to complete. Most students usually arrange time between or after classes.

Q: What kind of testing can a student expect?

A: The LD Specialist will administer tests that determine processing difficulties, ability and achievement. These tests are unique in that they are designed to provide the best indication of their strenghts and weaknesses. After the LD evaluation, the student will meet with the LD Specialist to review the test results. If a student is eligible for services, appropriate accommodations are documented and sent to the DSPS counselor. At this point students can begin receiving services.

Q: What services and/or accommodations are available?

A: Based upon the individual evaluation, services may include but are not limited to:

  • test accommodations--extra time, a quiet room, use of computers
  • assistive technology--Kurzweil 3000, Dragon, screen reader/CCTV
  • priority registration
  • liaison services between student and instructors/counselors
