I was born in the “Show Me State” Missouri, in the city of St. Louis. I grew up in one of the homes built for the St. Louis Exposition. My parents decided to move to California in 1948 at which time I enrolled in Venice High School in Los Angeles. My education continued at Los Angeles City College (AA), followed by UC Berkeley (BA 1955) and lastly Stanford University (MA) 1957. In graduate school at UOP, I earned an Administrative Credential in Education.
I have taught in four Community Colleges: Monterey Peninsula, Santa Barbara, San Jose, and the former Stockton College, now San Joaquin Delta College College (25 years). At Delta College I directed the Reentry Program for students 25 years of age and older for 10 years. I retired in December 1985. Following retirement I chaired the University of Pacific’s University College Advisory Committee (RE-Entry) for six years.
From 1977-1979, I served as State President of California Women Teaching in Higher Education, which included 110 community colleges, 10 University of Californian campuses, the California State Universities, and all of the private colleges and Universities in California.
With the help of the Stockton branch of American Association of University Women, the San Joaquin County Commissions on the Status of Women (which I founded in 1974), and other individuals in the community, I campaigned for 20 years to establish a Child Care Center at Delta College. The Center opened in April 24, 1994 and still operates today. I also successfully lobbied the SJDC administration to award child care scholarships to needy parents within San Joaquin County.
Politically I have served on the Stockton City Council, the former Stockton Redevelopment Commission for six years, and the Stockton Unified School District.
I am the founder of the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women’s Susan B. Anthony Awards Banquet, now in its 40th year. Over 400 outstanding women have been honored to date
Currently I am active in the Haggin Museum, Stockton Symphony Alliance, Stockton Opera Guild, American Association of University Women, Tau chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, the National Organization for Women, Truman Club, P.E.O., Philomathean Club, County Commission on the Status of Women, and the Women Executives of Stockton.
I am married to John Linley McCarthy who also taught at Delta College. We have six adult children.
