Gary Barlow has assumed the reins as Head Coach since 2001. Coach Barlow has led the Mustang program to a 60-37 combined record. The 2004 team was ranked #7 nationally by J.C. Gridwire and #2 in Northern California. His teams are 29-17 in conference play and have been crowned Conference Champions three times.
During Barlow’s tenure, Delta has appeared in ten post-season bowl games. Bowl victories include the 2001 Capitol Shrine Bowl, the 2004 Holiday Bowl and the 36-14 win over defending National Champion San Francisco in the 2008 Hawaiian Punch Bowl. The 2011 team concluded last season beating De Anza College 63-14 in the Delta Togo Bowl.
In addition to team successes, 82 student-athletes have been awarded athletic scholarships. Scholar-Athlete recognition has been awarded to 83 players.
Coach Barlow has been twice named Conference Coach of the Year (2002 and 2004). In addition to these honors, he has been featured as a speaker before the National Convention of the American Football Coaches Association on two occasions.
A Tracy High School product, Coach Barlow’s playing career included stints at the University of Wyoming (1985-86), Delta College (1987), and the University of the Pacific (1988-89). Following graduation from UOP, he signed a contract to play for the NFL’s New York Giants. He finished his playing days as a member of the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe.
Since that time, Coach Barlow has built an impressive coaching resume. He began his coaching career at Delta College as Offensive Line Coach (1990-91). The following year he moved to Los Angeles Valley College serving as Offensive Line Coach and Offensive Coordinator until 1996. LA Valley emerged as one of the top junior college programs in the United States, playing for the national championship during this span. In 1997 he was named Head Football Coach.
Gary returned to Delta College in 1999 as Offensive Coordinator. His presence and influence was immediately felt. In his initial year the Mustang offense ranked in California’s top ten in every offensive category. The following year, Delta was invited to its first bowl game since 1996.
Gary is single, and resides in Stockton. He has two children, Giancarlo and Gianna.
Doug Murray has been at Delta since 2007, serving as the Mustangs’ Defensive Backfield Coach. He has an extensive background and has coached at several levels. Before coming to Delta, he was the Head Coach of the Stockton Lightning (Arena Football League 2). Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at U.C. Davis, Menlo College, Chabot College and St. Mary’s High School in Stockton.
Coach Murray is highly respected in the coaching profession. In 2011 he represented Delta College as a speaker at the national convention of the American Football Coaches Association.
In addition to his on-the-field duties, the role of Assistant Head Coach entails a myriad of administrative responsibilities. Chief among them is Murray’s job as Recruiting Coordinator. He is a personable, tireless, high energy worker possessing great communication skills. Since joining the staff in 2008, his contributions have been substantial. As a member of the College’s Academic Senate he has been an articulate and tremendously effective as a champion for Delta’s student-athletes.
Coach Murray played his college football as a wide receiver at Allen Hancock College and California State University Hayward. He graduated with a B.A. in Sociology. He later returned to Hayward and earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Doug and his wife Natalia reside in Stockton with their daughter Naje’ and son Nicolas.
Todd Herrington has been a member of the Delta College Football Coaching staff since 1995. He has coached every position on the defensive side of the ball.
Coach Herrington assumed control of the defense in 2001. Since then, his duties as Defensive Coordinator have entailed planning and implementing the Mustangs’ sophisticated defensive scheme. His efforts have resulted in Delta College consistently fielding formidable defensive units. In recognition of this, Todd was a featured speaker at the 2011 National Convention of the American Football Coaches Association.
Todd’s college playing career began at Fullerton College in 1983. After two years, and a Junior College National Championship, he was recruited to the University of the Pacific where he played linebacker from 1985 through 1987. He graduated from U.O.P. in 1988 and earned his M.A. there in 1995.
Todd and his wife Kari reside in Stockton. They have three daughters; Karly, Katelyne and Taitum.
Jackson Ameperosa joined the Delta College football staff in 2015 and will coach the Tight Ends. Ameperosa began his coaching career at Santa Rosa Jr. College from 1993-95. He coached the offensive line where he produced three All-League lineman and two Junior College All-Americans.
From 1996-2000 he coached at Ranch Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, CA. He coached the defensive ends, outside line backers, and special teams.
Ameperosa moved to Stockton, CA and coached the defensive line at Edison High School from 2000-2004. From 2005-2012 he coached at the pop warner level, volunteering time working with inner city youth and the Delta Youth Athletic League of Stockton.
In 2013 Ameperosa returned to the college game by coaching the defensive line at Santa Rosa Jr. College and produced one All-League lineman.
Ameperosa is a resident of Stockton and is married to his wife Brianne. They have three children, daughter Keilalani, and sons Roman and Brandon.
Carlos Franco, Defensive Backs
Carlos Franco joined Deltas Football staff in 2015. A local product, Coach Franco prepped at Franklin High School earning All-League and All-Area Honors as a running back. He played collegiately at Trinity College, Hayward State, and Humboldt State earning All-Conference Honors and was a member of Humboldt States 1994 Conference Championship Team. Upon completing his collegiate career, Franco played two seasons in the German (Niedersachsen) Football League. Upon completing his playing career Coach Franco returned to Stockton and began teaching where served as Head Junior Varsity and Varsity Football Coach at his Alma Mater for a combined total of 11 years. During this time Coach Franco helped form a football team in his families home town of Tepatitlan, Jalisco Mexico. In addition to coaching and playing at an international level, Coach Franco has completed Coaching Internships with The San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League and has also worked as a consultant with The Sabercats. Coach Franco holds a BA in Physical Education from Hayward State, a Masters Degree in Cross Cultural Education from National University, and was a 2009 inductee to Stockton's Mexican Sports Hall Of Fame. Coach Franco teaches Physical Education at Franklin HS, he and his wife Fabiola Franco reside in Garden Acres, CA.
Steven Wichman , Wide Recievers
Steven Wichman joined the Delta Coaching staff in 2015. Prior to assuming his role as Wide Receivers coach here at Delta College, coach Wichman served as Wide Receivers coach at Tracy High in 2008, Kimball JV Head Coach from 2009 - 2012 and Varsity Head Coach at Lathrop High School from 2012 - 2015. Coach Wichman is a 2002 graduate of West High School in Tracy. After graduating from West High in 2002, coach Wichman joined the Mustangs as a Quarterback for Coach Barlow and staff from 2003 - 2005. During these two seasons the Mustangs posted an 18-4 record and were winners of the Tri-Counties Holiday Bowl. After receiving his Associates Degree from Delta in 2005 coach Wichman accepted a Scholarship to the University of Idaho where he played Quarterback from 2005 - 2007.
Coach Wichman is a High School Math teacher at West High and currently resides in Tracy with his wife Jen, son Braden and two dogs Lucy and Gracy.
Alex Marchan, Defensive line
Alex Marchan joined the Delta Football staff in 2015 and has been coaching for 26 years at the collegiate, junior college, high school, amateur adult, and youth football levels.
In 2014 he coached the Offensive Line, at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland where he coached two first team All-League Lineman. His unit blocked for the league leading rusher with over 1,500 yards for the season. Between 2005 and 2007 he coached in Virginia Beach, Virginia at Salem High and Middle school serving as the Linebacker Coach and Defensive Coordinator, where his defense was ranked top 5 of the league. Coach Marchan coached at his Alma Mater, MT. Eden High School in Hayward from 1988 - 1992 serving as Linebacker Coach, Head JV Coach, and Defensive Coordinator on Varsity. He also coached at San Francisco State University from1992 - 1994, coaching the defensive line and inside linebackers where he coached two All-Conference players, one as a defensive lineman and inside linebacker. In 1999 - 2001 he coached at Chabot College coaching the outside linebackers. Coach Marchan was the head coach of the 49ers of Redwood City, Amateur Adult Football, from 1999-2003 where he compiled a record of 35-15 during the regular season, and 5-2 playoff record. In 2000 and 2001 he won the Amateur Bowl Championship game. In 2001 his team went 10-0 and won the California State Amateur Championship and was ranked # 3 team, Triple A, in the nation. In 2007 Coach Marchan was elected to the Minor League Football News Hall of Fame. Coach Marchan played at San Jose State, linebacker and is a retired Police officer. He resides in Dublin and has three adult sons, Derek, Michael, and Taylor.
Jacob Boyd became a member of the Mustang coaching staf in 2012. He is a 2002 product of Tracy High School. While there, he earned both all-area and all-league honors as an offensive lineman. Boyd then enrolled at Delta College and played center and guard during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
Jake completed his college football career at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, where he helped the Lopers to a 2005 Rocky Mountain Conference Championship and a Division II playoff berth. After graduating, he returned to Tracy and coached the offensive line at Tracy High School for five seasons
Coach Boyd is a teacher for the San Joaquin County Office of Education one. Program. He resides in Tracy and is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.
Bryan Babcock, Strength Coach
Coach Babcock currently serves as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Delta Football and is the Owner of P2 Sports Performance training center in Stockton. Bryan Babcock M.S.,C.S.C.S holds a Masters of Science Degree in Exercise Science, a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education as well as a Bachelors Degree from Chico State in Psychology. He is also a National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has held this distinction since 2008.. Bryan has experience as an assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at The University of the Pacific in which he was in charge of training the Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Field Hockey teams. During the summer of 2012 Bryan interned at Stanford University with the Football Strength and Conditioning staff and also served as the Men’s Sprints Coach at Sacramento City College from 2005-2008. During this time the team won the California Junior College State Title in 2007 and two NorCal Regional titles. Bryan currently resides in Stockton CA with his wife Patricia and two children Matthew and Lauren.
Jamie DeRollo joined Delta's Athletic Training staff in September 2008, as Women's Athletic Trainer. She earned her Masters of Business Administration from South University in Healthcare Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Fresno State University. While at Fresno she had the opportunity to work with numerous Division I athletes. Before Fresno she played soccer at Modesto Junior College, where she got into the athletic training field and graduated from there with both an Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees.
Jamie began working for San Luis Sports Therapy in Paso Robles in June of 2003 after graduating from Fresno State. She started Athletic Training Positions at both St. Joseph and Templeton High School's on the Central Coast. Then she and her family re-located back to the Modesto area in 2006 to implement and Athletic Training position and a ROP program at Galt High School.
Jamie continues to teach CPR and first aid through the American Red Cross and is also a Certified EMT. She has worked with California USA Wrestling for the last nine years and for various Volleyball Festivals, the San Luis Obispo Panthers (a semi-professional football team) and NBC camps for volleyball and basketball.
Jamie and her husband reside in Riverbank. They have a son Francis and two daughters Adrianna and Belladonna.
Kevin Anderson joined Delta's Athletic Training staff in April 2013. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Sports Medicine from the University of the Pacific in 1995 and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nevada-Reno in 1993. He currently serves as a Clinical Instructor for the Athletic Training program at the University of the Pacific.
Prior to joining Delta, Kevin served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL for 8 seasons and the Stockton Lightning arena football team for 4 seasons. During that period, he represented the Thunder at 3 ECHL All-Star Games and was recognized in 2011 as the ECHL Athletic Trainer of the Year. Additionally in 2008, he was recognized as the arena football Athletic Trainer of the Year.
Kevin gained experience in sports medicine as the Assistant Director of Athletic Training at the University of the Pacific from 1993 - 1998. During his tenure at Pacific, he also dedicated his time as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Magic Johnson Summer Basketball Camps from 1994 – 1997 and as a volunteer athletic trainer for various Professional Bull Riding (PBR) Events and professional rodeos. Prior to Pacific, Kevin worked as an athletic training intern in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams in 1992 and 1993.
Kevin and his wife Michelle currently reside in Stockton.
Erik has two children Austin and Rudi who reside in Manteca.
