Tutors may work as documented Delta College employees or as volunteers.

Tutor applicants must complete an application and interview with the Coordinator. 

In addition, HR paperwork must be completed which includes a fingerprint scan and a TB test.  Tests and scans within the past 2 years will be accepted by HR.  Check with HR to confirm that current shots/scans are acceptable.

Tutors earn between $10.00 and $11.75 per hour depending on qualifications and tutoring experience.  Tutors not taking 9 units of classes at Delta College are considered non-student employees and are limited to working 195 days in a fiscal year.  Non-student tutors must be approved at a regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting before they can begin work.


Content Tutor qualifications are:

  • Tutor applicants must have completed the course they wish to tutor within 3 semesters with an A or B grade.
  • Applicants must provide an instructor recommendation.
  • Tutors must have a 2.5 GPA and no Holds from Delta College.

Content Tutoring generally consists of the following:

  • Checking students in and out of the Tutoring Center
  • Documenting student progress in student folders
  • Working with students in specific content area courses
  • Tutoring drop-in students and/or students with standing appointments
  • Helping students with assignments
  • Helping students review class notes and content
  • Providing helpful study techniques for their content area
  • Providing encouragement

Content tutor training:

After completing the application process, all content tutors complete a one-unit tutor training course, ENG 32A. The first two assignments in the course must be completed before the tutor-in-training starts tutoring. Content tutors also do periodic, mandatory trainings.
