Job Specific Basic Skills (JSBS)/Reading 99 A-E, is a supervised lab environment designed specifically for CalWORKs students. The lab is an additional approved CalWORKs activity for students that need to meet their weekly work participation requirement. Selina Mendoza is the CalWORKs employee who coordinates the lab. The lab gives students the opportunity to increase their reading and writing skill levels. Limited tutoring services are available. Students are assigned modules based upon individual assessment of their skills. Students of all skill levels are appropriate for JSBS. Job Specific Basic Skills prepares all CalWORKs students for success in their vocational training programs and throughout their careers.
JSBS can be repeated as many semesters as a student attends and participates in the CalWORKs Program. Textbooks are required for students enrolled in JSBS. The books are purchased once and used throughout the students' program of study. A flash drive and a one subject notebook are also required items for the lab. The flash drive will also be purchased once and used throughout the student's time in the lab. However, a new one subject notebook will need to be purchased each semester that the student is enrolled in Reading 99 A-E.
While JSBS is open entry/open exit, students are assigned to specific times in the lab based upon each individual's schedule of classes. Students must attend their contracted hours in order to receive credit for their time in JSBS. Each student clocks in and out daily and the hours are tracked carefully by the CalWORKs staff. Time in the lab will be reported to CalWORKs Case Managers to be counted toward the required hours per week.
Supervised Study Time (SST) is also available to students who are enrolled in JSBS. Supervised study time is allotted to each student based upon his/her class schedule and needs. Hours spent in Supervised Study Time also count toward a student's CalWORKs participation requirement. Supervised Study Time can also be counted as a core activity. Hours are monitored by time clock and are reported monthly to CalWORKs Case Managers.
A computer lab is available for students to use for:
Following college policy, a student will be dropped from either JSBS or SST when he or she misses one more day than the class meets per week.
Students are referred to JSBS and SST by an Academic Advisor. To schedule to meet with an Academic Advisor, call 954-5151 x. 6209.
