Lecture Topic For Examination #1

Introduction to Metrics

Bring Calculator to this lecture

Background:

This lecture is designed to help you understand the basics of the metric system used by scientists worldwide. We will cover only a small part of the metric system; that part which we will be using in the laboratory this semester.

Reading Assignment:

Refer to the Survey of Biology Lecture Notes for additional references to this topic.

Refer to page 8 - Chapter Summary in Survey of Biology Lecture Notes- for the terms and key points you need to know. The Key Points are your guide to success in the course because they focus your attention on those topics upon which you need to concentrate your study to be optimally prepared for the upcoming examination.

Practice:

During lecture you will receive answers to the problems which begin on page 5 of the lecture notes. You will also be introduced to the concept of surface area to volume ratios, temperature conversions, and surface area to volume calculations. Study the handout you received on "Calculating Surface Area." Begin practicing how to do these problems so you will be prepared to do them on the first examination.

Lab Manual Assignment:

Complete the crossword, and questions on Chapter 1 prior to lab. Hint: begin to work one or two labs ahead so that you are never caught behind. Have the crossword ready to hand in at the start of class to the slotted drawer.

Study Group Activities:

Quiz everyone in the group on the flashcards labeled "Metrics." Try to complete this before the lecture called "Introduction to Metrics." Practice metric conversions, temperature conversions, and surface area to volume ratio calculations after you have heard the lecture. There is a handout on how to do surface area to volume calculations. See me if you have not received one in lab.

Interactive Study Partner CD ROM: (Install CD on your computer)

There is no CD ROM topic devoted exclusively to the metric system. You will need to concentrate on the lecture to gain the information that you will need.
