Humanities

Why Choose Our Humanities Program?

From ancient times to the present day, people around the globe have raised fundamental questions about life. The humanities can be described as the study of the myriad of ways in which people process and document the human experience as we attempt to find answers. We have used language, philosophy, religion, created civilizations and art, music, and literature to understand, organize and record our world.

Through exploration of the humanities we learn how to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions. Humanistic subjects have been at the heart of a liberal arts education since the ancient Greeks first used them to educate their citizens. Traditionally, the humanities emphasize analysis and exchange of ideas rather than the creative expression of the arts or the quantitative explanation of the sciences.

Students move beyond their own assumptions toward a deeper understanding of human life and its perplexities by rigorous exploration of complex philosophical arguments, by analyzing language as the main vehicle of human communication and cultural transmission, by comparing and contrasting the religions of the world, and by studying the world’s civilizations. These subjects help students open their imaginations to fresh perspectives on the world as they explore humanity’s lessons of the past, its complexity of the present, and its possibilities for the future.

Students expand their horizons, sharpen their analytical skills and prepare themselves for an increasingly multicultural world as they engage with the topics offered in Delta’s humanities courses:

           Civilization           Linguistics           Humanities           Philosophy             Religion

What are the degree options?
