The Smart Panel is a user-friendly control system that is designed to make your multimedia presentations easy and trouble-free. By the simple press of a few buttons, you can choose which type of media you wish to display. As the user you can select any of several different sources, such as a computer, VCR, DVD player, document camera, or laserdisc player. You also have the ability to connect other peripheral equipment, such as a laptop or a video camera for playback. The Smart Panel is configured to integrate your teaching style with technology, and is pre-programmed by the technicians.
Note: Almost all of the multimedia podiums are equipped with locks to ensure that the equipment remains in place and in good working order. Please be sure to pick up a key so that you have access to the presentation system. With the exception of the West Forum and Holt 213, all podiums are keyed alike.
1. LOWER THE SCREEN
Many of the rooms have an electric motorized screen. The control switch for the screen is generally a “rocker” switch and is usually found on the wall either adjacent to or behind the podium.
2. TURN THE PROJECTOR ON by pressing the “ON” button on the Smart Panel.
Allow about one minute of warm-up time for most projectors. (Warm-up is indicated by a blinking red LED light on the Smart Panel.)
Once the Smart Panel LED light becomes green, the Smart Panel is ready to receive commands. (Note: If the panel is turned off for any reason, there is a 65 second cool-down/warm-up period before the panel will be ready again.)
3. TURN ON YOUR SOURCE:
Select and press the “ VCR” button on the Smart Panel.
To turn on the VCR, press the Power button on the VCR.
To show a videotape, insert your tape into the VCR and press “Play”. You also have the ability to fast forward, rewind, pause, and stop.
If you would like to access the Distribution System, call the AV Department by using the speed dial button on the classroom phone, and we will assist you.
Select and press the “Computer” button on the Smart Panel .
(Note: Many classrooms have a small knob located on the Smart Panel that switches between “PODIUM COMPUTER” and “LAPTOP”. Please make sure that this knob is set for the correct computer.)
To turn on the computer, press the Power buttons on the computer and the monitor.
To connect a laptop to the Smart Panel, you will need a HD15 VGA cable (male to male). The AV Department has a limited number of these cables available for short-term loan only. If you intend to use a laptop frequently, you should plan to purchase one of these cables for your own use.
Plug one end of the cable into the available connector on the Smart Panel and the other end into your laptop. (Note: You may need to set your laptop’s display for “multiple monitors” in order for it to project through the system.)
Stand-alone players: Select and press the “DVD” or “DVD/VCR” button on the Smart Panel.
DVD players can either be single DVD players or DVD/VCR combo units.
To turn on the DVD or DVD/VCR player, press the Power button on the unit. Open the DVD tray, insert your DVD, close the tray, and press “Play”. You also have the ability to search, fast forward, rewind, pause, and stop.
Computer DVD Drives: Select and press the “COMPUTER” button on the Smart Panel.
Make sure that the computer is turned on, open the drive tray, and insert the DVD. After closing the tray, the computer will usually prompt you regarding your DVD, or it may automatically start playing. In some cases, you may need to access the DVD software first.
3. VOLUME CONTROL:
Most classrooms are equipped with an amplifier and two external speakers for enhanced sound quality. The amplifier will need to be turned on by pressing the Power button in order for the sound to come through the system. A few rooms do not have an amplifier; in this case, the built-in speaker on the projector is used.
To increase the volume, use the Volume“UP” Button on the Smart Panel.
To decrease the volume, use the Volume “DOWN” Button on the Smart Panel.
At the conclusion of your presentation or class, please TURN OFF the SmartPanel by pressing the “OFF” button. This will help to alleviate unnecessary lamp time on the projector.
Additionally, please turn off all other equipment and place any remote controls you may have used back into the podium.
Finally, please be sure to RE-LOCK the podium doors.
