Her Masters Thesis, written for the Universtiy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, explored the relation of Egon Schiele to Gustav Klimt. She is currently working on her Ph.D. dissertation, The sources, rhetoric and gender of Artistic Dress, 1893 to 1911. Funding for that project has been provided by the Deutsche Akademische Austauchdienst, the Center for Advanced Study, Phillip Fehl and the Nelle M. Signor International Relations Fund. She has taught art history at Delta since 1999, and lectured on clothing history at the University of California at Davis.

Ms. Barrows has supplemented her work in art history with museum and gallery experience. She has worked in the curatorial departments of museums in Niagara Falls, New York and Valencia, Spain. At the Sacramento artists' collaborative, MatrixArts, she served as Artistic Director and Exhibitions Chair. As a consultant for the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, she catalogued the city's public art collection. In her first year at Delta college, she took part in the renovation of a gallery space on campus and oversaw the operations of the L. H. Horton, Jr. Gallery.

Along with her studies and teaching, Ms. Barrows serves as a juror for regional art exhibitions and as a lecturer for the docent training at the Haggin Museum.

In her spare time, she attempts to recreate the Arena Chapel in her bathroom and plays soccer.
