Delta History

The Larry Huiras Era

Larry Huiras had a very successful career at Amos Alonzo Stagg HS before joining Bill Anttila here at Delta.  First as Anttila's Assistant and later as Delta's Head Coach, Coach Huiras continued to focus on utilizing local Central Valley athletes as a foundation for building strong teams at the JC level.  His Delta College teams earned conference championships in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1996, 1998, and 2002. The 1998 team was the first team in schools history to make it to the State Championship Tournament. The 2002 team went undefeated in league, were named #3 in Northern California, and placed 8th at the State Tournament. In all the other years Huiras was at Delta, no team finished lower than third place.  Larry has also been inducted into the Stockton Hall of Fame as well as the St. Mary's Hall of Fame.

The Bill Anttila Era

USA Water Polo Hall of Famer Bill Anttila was not only the first Delta Water Polo Coach, he was the first ever coach of University of the Pacific. In those early years both College of the Pacific and Delta College (then called Stockton College) trained and played games together as one team.  in 1947, Anttila came from the east coast after WWI and began a tremendous grass root movement of water polo in the ccentral california valley.  Many of today's referees, coaches, and contributors of water polo, all have ties to Coach Anttila's legendary program.  From 1950-1983 Coach compiled a record of 498 wins and 243 losses.  Coach Anttila has also coached two athletes at Delta College that have gone on to make the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame; Bob Gaughran and John Felix.  Antilla was also the head men's swim coach at Delta from 1947-1967.  Along with the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame, Coach Anttila was enshrined into the University of the Pacific, Springfield College, and Stockton Hall of Fames.
