BASKETBALL (W) COACHING STAFF

Head Coach, Gina Johnson

Coach Johnson begins her ninth season with the Lady Mustang Basketball program and 13th as a Community College Head Coach (294-127). The Lady Mustangs have been a program to contend with since their 1997 Bay Valley Conference Title - the first ever at Delta College!  The Lady Mustangs are coming off another Championship year winning their 3rd Bay Valley Conference Championship in a row.

Coach Johnson believes in an up-tempo style of offense and though defensive full court play.  Johnson’s goal as a coach is to help develop her student-athletes to transfer, and assist them in earning an athletic scholarship.  Coach Johnson wants to do what it takes to prepare her student-athletes for the academic and athletic demands that four-year schools place on student-athletes.  She has been instrumental in the development and transfer of many top quality players through her program.  The most fulfillment Coach Johnson experiences as a coach is helping a number of her players transfer on basketball scholarships to the next level.

Before coming to Delta College, Coach Johnson began her Community College Head Coaching career at Foothill College.  While at Foothill, Johnson earned a .71 winning percentage (89-32) and turned around a 1992 10-18 team into a strong Coast Conference program (1993-96).  One of the accomplishments Johnson is proud of is being named the Coast Conference Champions (the first Championship ever) for three consecutive years in a row (1993-96).  Prior to 1993 Foothill had never won a conference championship.  She credits her success at Foothill to the great group of young ladies who came through the program.

In her nine years as a head coach at Delta, Johnson has enjoyed the competition of the tough Bay Valley Conference.  In the 1996-97 season, the Lady Mustangs participated in a Cinderella season for a program that had been struggling in previous years.  Delta fell one game short of finishing an undefeated conference schedule (13-1).  The Lady Mustangs finished the season 24-7 and went on to the second round of playoff competition.  Since 1997 the Lady Mustangs have been a team to contend with in the Bay Valley Conference.  The best team in Delta Women’s Basketball history may arguable be the 2001-02 Mustangs who finished 29-7 and were one game shy of competing for the California State Championship Game only.  The Lady Mustangs finished 29-7 and had a remarkable year.  Coach Johnson was named Northern California Coach of the Year by her colleagues for the many successes in 2002.  In 2002-03 Mustangs finished 28-7 and earned a second Bay Valley Conference title.  The Lady Mustangs shared the BVC title with league rival Sierra College.  Johnson is proud of the players that have graduated and or transferred to a four-year institution.  There are a number of student-athletes that have earned basketball scholarships.  She only hopes the trend continues.

A 1991 graduate of Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, she finished her playing career in 1990 as a two-year starting guard for the Cal Poly Lady Mustangs. Prior to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Johnson was a junior college All-Conference player for DeAnza College in Cupertino.  She was named MVP of the Coast Conference in 1988 and was honored as a player to the California Community College 1st Team All-State.  She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga.  She resides in Elk Grove with her husband Mike, and sons Brandon (7), Brady (4 1/2), and their newest addition a golden retriever puppy Jake.

Assistant Coach, Que Ngo

This is Coach Ngo’s 3rd year as an assistant with the Women’s Basketball Program. The opportunity to coach under Coach Johnson at the community college level has been a great learning experience on and off the court since leaving the high school ranks.

Coach Ngo has been coaching for 10 years at the High School level (Buchannan High, Del Campo, Folsom High School, and Lincoln High in Stockton) before residing with the Delta Women's Program. Coach Ngo has also been very much involved in the AAU community since 1998.  He is currently coaching the Diablo Valley Eagles 12U and is involved in player development with many local high school players.  He is currently running skill developmental clinics at Delta for kids ages 9-13 and hopes to continue helping Coach Johnson and the Women's program become one of the powerhouse programs in the state.

Que is a Lincoln High School graduate (1994) and received his Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology from Sacramento State University (2002).  He plans on starting his Masters Degree in January.  He is single and resides in Elk Grove.
