Head Coach

Gina Johnson (14th Season, 18th Career Head CC Coach)

Gina JohnsonCoach Johnson begins her 14th season with the Lady Mustangs Basketball program (334-112) and 18th as a Community College Head Coach (419-149). The Lady Mustangs have been a program to contend with since Coach Johnson took over in 1996 and led the Mustangs to their first Bay Valley Conference title in 1997. Under Coach Johnson, the Mustangs have advanced to post season competition in twelve of her fourteen seasons as head coach. The Delta Mustangs are coming off another championship year winning their 8th Conference Championship in a row and 9th overall. San Joaquin Delta Women’s Basketball formed a new conference in 2005 and has been the only championship Women's basketball team since the BIG 8 began. The Lady Mustangs just finished their 2008-09 season (31-7, 12-2) in the BIG 8 Conference. They advanced to the California State Elite 8 Tournament beating Antelope Valley College (60-56) and Mt. San Antonio (60-55) to advance to the state championship game. The Mustangs lost to Pasadena City College (64-74) in the final, but they made a strong run for the Title.

In her fourteen years as a head coach at Delta, Gina Johnson has enjoyed the competition of the tough Bay Valley Conference and the Big 7 Conference which is now the BIG 8. In the 1996-97 season, the Lady Mustangs participated in a Cinderella season for a program that had been struggling in previous years. Delta fell one game short of finishing an undefeated conference schedule (13-1). The Lady Mustangs finished the season 24-7 and went on to the second round of playoff competition. Since 1997 the Lady Mustangs have been a team to contend with in the Bay Valley Conference. In 2001-02 the Lady Mustangs finished 29-7 and were one game shy of competing for the California State Championship Game. The Lady Mustangs finished 29-7 and had a remarkable year.

Coach Johnson was named Northern California Coach of the Year by her colleagues for the many successes in 2002. The Mustangs have gone on to dominate the conference winning 8 championships in a row. Coach Johnson has been named Conference Coach of the Year for the past five seasons. The best team in Delta Women’s Basketball history may arguably be the 2005-06 team (33-5) who advanced to the California State Championship game and finished state runner up. Johnson is proud of the players that have graduated and or transferred to a four-year institution. There are 42 former Mustangs that have earned basketball scholarships since 1996 and 13 of them have signed to Division I Institutions. The Mustangs have a very high transfer and graduation rate over the years. This is due to the strong academic focus within the Delta Women’s Basketball program.

Coach Johnson believes in an up-tempo style of offense and tough defensive full court play. Johnson’s goal as a coach is to help develop her student-athletes on and off the basketball court. Her main objective is to prepare her athletes to transfer, and assist them in earning an athletic scholarship. Coach Johnson wants to do what it takes to prepare her student-athletes for the academic and athletic demands that four-year schools place on student-athletes.

Coach Johnson is a 1991 graduate of Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo.  She finished her playing career in 1990 as a two-year starting guard for the Cal Poly Lady Mustangs. Prior to Cal Poly, Johnson was a junior college All-Conference player for DeAnza College. She was named MVP of the Coast Conference in 1988 and was honored as a player to the California Community College First Team All-State. She holds a Masters Degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from St. Mary's College in Moraga. Coach Johnson is married to Mike Johnson and has two children- Brandon (11) and Brady (8).
