Game times are 2pm on Thursday and Friday, and 1pm on Saturday. #1 Mustangs take hard fought series vs. #11 San Jose City College While most of the teams were fighting the rain trying to get their opening weekend in, the top ranked Mustangs were fighting a determined San Jose City College team. The Jaguars came in as the #11 team in Northern California determined to prove they deserved a higher ranking. The Jags also had a great playoff run last year finishing third in Northern California, and returned with two preseason All American pitchers in Don Medlinger and Harold Zosal. The Mustangs got to see both of them in game 1 on Thursday. Game 1: Delta 9, SJCC 7 Game one of the season looked to be a strong pitching duel as Kevin Rogers faced off against Don Medlinger. Rogers held up his end of the bargain by throwing 5 2/3 innings of shut out baseball. It took a few innings, but the Mustangs finally got to preseason All American, Don Medlinger. Stephen Malcolm led off the 3rd inning by reaching on an error and Jeff McKenzie followed with a hit and run single. The two then worked a double steal. Ryan Scornaienchi was hit by a pitch to load the bases for clean up hitter Jake Mote, who drove a full count pitch off the center field fence to score the first three runs of the game. The Mustangs added another run in the fourth when Mckenzie scored Kyle Hassna on a ground ball after Hassna singled and Stephen Malcolm doubled. Lincoln Clapper drove in McKenzie and Mote in the seventh with a double, and the Mustangs tallied three more runs in the eighth to take a 9-2 lead. The finish was anything but easy. As the rain began to come down the Mustangs had to use five more pitchers before Stephen Malcolm finally closed the game. Game 2: SJCC 14, Delta 11 Game two did not look like two of top teams in the area. The Mustangs struggled on the mound as they walked eight, hit three and gave up three home runs. The defense did not play well either committing four errors on the day. Despite the poor play, the Mustangs had a 10-8 lead going into the eighth as McKenzie (2-5), Garret Fisher(double and 2 RBI), Josh Grijalva (2-4 with 3 runs), Jake Cose (1-2 with a HR) and Ryan Scornaienchi (RBI double) had a productive offensive day, but the Jags scored six runs in the eighth to earn the victory. Game 3: Delta 7, SJCC 5 Game 3 saw the Jag's jump out to a quick 4-1 lead, but the Mustangs stormed back behind the solid pitching of Jordan Louie (4 innings, 0 runs, 5 K's) and Freddie Solari (2 shutout innings, 3 K's). Stephen Malcolm pitched the ninth to record his 2nd save of the season. The Mustangs had a four run sixth inning with the big hit coming on Ryan Scornaienchi's 3 run double. The offense pounded out twelve hits, led by Stephen Malcolm (3-5, 2 R), Ryan Scornaienchi (3-5, 4 RBI), Randy Villa (2-4), Vince Canale (1-1 pinch hit) and Kyle Hassna (1-1 RBI single). Mustangs ranked #1 in 2010 Norcal Preseason Poll and # 2 in ABCA Regional Poll (CA, WA, OR) The California Baseball Coaches Association has picked the Delta Mustangs as the favorite to repeat as the Northern California Champion. Orange coast was picked again as the top team from the south. If The Mustangs are to repeat it will be with almost an entirely new lineup as Kevin Rogers and Vinnie Devencenzi are the only returning starters. Mustangs perform in the classroom

2010 Delta College Baseball Season Outlook The Delta College Mustangs are beginning the third season under Head Coach Reed Peters and assistants Denny Peterson, Matt Wilson and Daniel Fernandez. The Mustangs are coming off a banner year that included regional and super regional championships and a trip to the Final Four. The Mustangs finished the year as the State Runner Up, Delta's best finish since 1959. Additional 2009 honors include:
A return trip to the championship will mean a lot of new faces will have to step up. INEXPERIENCED: with only one starting position player and one starting pitcher returning, the Mustangs will need to mature quickly. 2010 will be extremely challenging for the Mustangs as this year’s schedule includes all but six games coming against top 20 teams. The Big 8 Conference was ranked as the most difficult conference in California last year, and for good reason, as five teams that reached the playoffs last year including two final four teams and four elite eight teams. Pitchers: Denny Peterson returns as pitching coach for the Mustangs. His staff was the best in the Big 8 and included the California Pitcher of the Year in Zach DeValle. While inexperienced, this year’s staff has a ton of potential. Returning from last year are lefthanders Kevin Rogers and Josh Rodriguez, and right-handers Brent Clapper, Freddie Solari, Andrew Gabriel, Eric Watts (redshirt), Dylan Coffin (redshirt) and Derrick Dederman (injured last year). A strong recruiting class includes right-handers Ryan Fisher (transfer from UOP), Stephen Malcolm (transfer from UC Irvine), Trevor Miller, Mike Garcia, Rafael Vasquez, Jay Shindledecker, Steve Raburn, Kyle Hassna, Jordan Louie, Jake Cose and Justin Tomek; and lefties Zach Costa and Josh Grijalva. This staff is extremely deep and talented with eleven guys throwing in the upper 80’s and above. Competition for the starting spots is still heavy with seven or eight guys possessing the ability to start. The bullpen should be balanced with Stephen Malcolm most likely taking on the role of closer and shortstop. Catchers: The catchers are coached by Matt Wilson. Matt comes to Delta from Sacramento State University where he coached the catchers for Head Coach John Smith. He will lead an inexperienced, but talented group of freshmen that includes Tyelr Eppler, Jordan Louie, and Kyle Hassna. All three have very good arms. Louie and Hassna will also pitch for the Mustangs Infielders: Daniel Fernandez begins his first seasonas the infield coach with the Mustangs, and should have some pretty good young talent to work with. First base is very deep with newcomers Jake Mote, Ryan Fisher and Randy Villa all having good falls. Sophomore Vince Canale should also see time at first as well as in the outfield. The middle infield is very talented as well. Stephen Malcolm will start at shortstop with Justin Boyd also seeing time there. Second base will be heavily contested between sophomore Jake Caton and freshmen Ricky Acosta and Brandon Hughes. Switch hitting Jake Cose will start at third base and be backed up by Chris Pile. Outfielders: Coach Peters will have a deep and versatile group of outfielders to work with. Sophomore Vinnie Devencenzi (34 starts) was the offensive MVP in the playoffs for the Mustangs last year. Lincoln Clapper (16 starts) Ryan Scornaienchi (1 start) and Vince Canale all contributed last year as freshmen and all have a chance to start this year. Newcomers Nick Rulli, Jeff McKenzie and Josh Grijalva are all very athletic should all see playing time as well. Head Coach Reed Peters is excited about this year’s club. While the team is young, the talent is good. The question will be, "Can this team gel together to make a return trip to Fresno?" A Big THANK YOU to all that attended the Golf Tournament, Banguet and Alumni Weekend. We greatly appreciate your support! 2009 Mustangs Honored as Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame Team of the Year Mustangs Moving On
