FRESNO - Delta baseball fans were prepared to celebrate twice Monday. They only got to do it once.

The capacity crowd in the Delta section of the bleachers at Fresno City College's John Euless Ballpark erupted into cheers when Delta topped Orange Coast 11-10 in 11 innings in the California Community College State Championship game. The victory forced a winner-take-all game for title, won by the Pirates 10-7. "We played our butts off," Delta coach Reed Peters said. "We just ran out of pitching, but we made things interesting."

Delta (34-19) lost to Orange Coast 8-5 on Saturday, the first day of the four-team, double-elimination tournament. The Mustangs stayed alive to make the decisive game by winning three consecutive games.

It was Delta's first state championship game appearance since winning the title in 1959, when still known as Stockton College. "This team's chemistry was the best of any team I've had," said Peters, whose team finished third in the Big 8 Conference, four spots higher than its preseason projection, then earned a No. 9 seed for the playoffs. "They believed they could win and worked hard."

Orange Coast (37-14), which entered the postseason as the south region's No. 2 seed, earned its first title since 1980.

In the final game, Peters started freshman Trae Lopez, who on Sunday allowed four earned runs in 12/3 innings against Diablo Valley. On Monday, Lopez went 11/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Fred Solari relieved Lopez, but the Pirates jumped on him to build an 8-1 advantage after three innings.

Delta got within 9-7 with three runs in the eighth. The Mustangs strung together five hits, capped by Bret Morgan's RBI single. But Vinnie Devencenzi was called out on strikes and Evan Peters grounded out to end the threat. Devencenzi finished 6 for 10 with three RBI.

Solari was relieved by Josh Rodriguez and Kevin Rogers, who also worked Sunday. "I have to hand it to guys like Josh and Freddie," said Chris Anklam, a fellow reliever. "They haven't seen much playing time, and they battled."

It was Anklam in the first game of the day who shut out the Pirates after they scored 10 runs in the first seven innings. He got the win by pitching the final 41/3 innings.

With score tied 10-10, Delta's first two batters of the 11th inning were retired before Thomas Shull lined a triple off the right-field fence. Pinch hitter Cody Scott ended the game with a single past shortstop. "That win was big," Reed Peters said. "But it taxed both teams, and we had played another game on top of it. "Give Orange Coast credit. They responded the next game right away with eight runs. They are a championship team."

FRESNO - Kevin Rogers got the privilege of taking the last walk off the pitcher's mound Sunday night. Rogers threw the final 42/3 innings at John Euless Ballpark to settle the Delta College baseball team as it held off Diablo Valley College 14-10. "I have the best defense in California behind me," said Rogers, who got the save by not allowing any hits or runs. "I just wanted to get them the ball."

The Mustangs (34-18) topped Santa Ana (37-13) in a morning 5-1 to stay alive in the losers bracket of the California Community College State Championship tournament. They play Orange Coast today at 11 a.m. If Delta wins, a second game will follow 30 minutes afterward to decide the championship.

Trae Lopez started against Diablo Valley (36-17) and got out of the first inning unscathed, and got five runs of support in the bottom of the inning. However, Lopez exited in the following inning after allowing the Vikings to tie the game.

Delta later went up 11-5, but again couldn't stop Diablo Valley. The Vikings scored on pitchers Brent Clapper and Steve Barrington to make the score 11-10 after five innings, before Rogers shut them down. "I hated to bring in Rogers because we were going to start him (today)," Delta coach Reed Peters said. "But at some point, we just had to stop them from scoring."

Bret Morgan led Delta by going 5 for 5 with four singles and a two-run home run, while Vinnie Devencenzi went 3 for 5 with a pair of triples and three RBI. "Those two were phenomenal hitting for us," Peters said. "They had clutch at-bat after clutch at-bat."

Santa Ana lost 3-2 on Saturday to Diablo Valley before Delta eliminated the Dons on Sunday morning, handing them their first back-to-back losses since March 24th. Santa Ana tied for the Orange Empire Conference championship with Orange Coast.

Jared Schlehuber improved to 8-1 by going 71/3 innings in the first game, allowing no runs and five hits. He struck out seven hitters and shut out a team that averaged 8.6 runs per game. Schlehuber, a 6-foot-3 right-hander has signed with Oral Roberts, added to a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run home run off of Daniel Fenwick. Schlehuber went 2 for 5 and also scored a run.

Delta's backup catcher, Aaron Rowley, started for Cody Scott and went 3 for 3 with a RBI and a run. He drove in Bryan Brown with a line drive single to put the Mustangs up in the second inning. "We had to do everything we did to get to (today)," Peters said. "I'm really proud the way our guys swung the bat today and made some unbelievable plays."

Mustangs trip in state opener

By Mark Godi: May 24, 2009 Record Correspondent

FRESNO - Reed Peters didn't make excuses for his starter Saturday night.

Zach DeValle, the Northern California pitcher of the year, exited after just three innings at John Euless Field as the Delta College baseball team lost 8-5 to Orange Coast. DeValle allowed five earned runs on seven hits, while walking two.

The Mustangs (32-18) dropped the first game of the California Community College State Championship tournament and are one loss away from elimination. They face Santa Ana today at 10 a.m. Diablo Valley beat Santa Ana earlier in the day, 3-2, and plays Orange Coast (35-13) at 2 p.m. for a spot in the tournament championship. "Zach was up in the zone, and they made him pay," said Peters, Delta's second-year coach. "Zach is not a velocity guy anyway, so when you leave it up, you're going to get hit."

DeValle, a sophomore from St. Mary's, entered the game 10-0 with a 2.49 ERA, but got behind in the count to several batters and was hit hard when he put the ball over the plate. "The bottom line was that this was uncharacteristic for him," said Peters. "I don't know if he was too amped up or what."

Steve Barrington spelled DeValle, and Delta trailed 6-0 after four innings. Mykal Stokes capped a three-run second inning with a RBI triple off the center-field wall.

The Mustangs made the score 6-3 in the sixth inning, started by a single from Jared Schlehuber that scored Vinnie Devencenzi. Stuart Burnett followed with a single and then Evan Peters cleared the bases with a deep single to the left field.

Peters played in four of Delta's five playoff games and enter the tournament hitting .214. He finished the night 2 for 4 with a team-best two runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Devencenzi led the team with a .478 batting average in the five previous games and went 0 for 3 with a strike out. Burnett went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Win gives Mustangs berth in state tourney

Stockton Record May 18: The Delta College baseball team had a four-hour ride home on Sunday night, but the Mustangs passed the time celebrating one of the most important wins in school history.

Delta beat Sierra 9-6 on Sunday to win the Northern California Super Regional in Quincy. The Mustangs advanced to the California State Community College Championship Tournament in Fresno next weekend and will chase its first state title in 50 years.

Delta will play Orange Coast in the first round of the state tournament on Friday, and Diablo Valley, Delta's rival from the Big 8 Conference, meets Santa Ana. Times of the games have not been determined. "It's just a tremendous honor, and we're very proud," Delta coach Reed Peters said in a cell phone interview while he was on the bus returning from Quincy, which is about 190 miles from Stockton. In the background players talked and laughed. "It just feels great," right fielder Vinnie Devencenzi said. "We knew we were a good enough team to make it this far."

Delta hasn't won the state title since 1959, when it was still called Stockton College. To advance this season, the Mustangs (32-17) had to get past defending state champion Sierra (31-20), which had to beat Delta twice Sunday to advance but lost the first game of the day. Delta beat the Wolverines four out of five times this season."Sierra is a tremendous team, and we knew as a defending champion they weren't going down easy," Peters said.

Delta's offense struck early and had a 7-1 lead after four innings. The Wolverines came within two runs, but couldn't overtake the Mustangs.

Stuart Burnett went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBI for Delta, Devencenzi went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI, Thomas Shull went 2 for 3 with a homer and Garrett Yrigoyen went 2 for 5. Freshman pitcher Kevin Rogers earned the win. Box Score

High drama as Delta moves on
By The Record May 17, 2009

Delta College's baseball team went through a wave of emotions in the final inning of its Northern California Super Regional game before beating defending state champion Sierra 6-5 on Saturday.

The Mustangs had a 5-3 lead erased in the top of the ninth when Joe Bonfe connected for a two-run homer to tie it at 5-5. But Delta answered with some last-inning heroics itself when Brett Morgan singled in the game-winner to give the Mustangs a victory at Feather River College in Quincy."It was a nail-biter all the way through,'' Delta coach Reed Peters said.

The Mustangs started the rally with one out in the ninth when Garrett Yrigoyen singled up the middle and Cody Scott followed with a walk. Thomas Shull singled in what appeared to be the game-winning hit, but Yrigoyen was thrown out at home. Morgan then followed with his big hit.

Peters praised the pitching of starter Trae Lopez, who gave up three runs and struck out seven over seven innings, and reliever Chris Anklam, who induced a double play in the top of the ninth to keep it a tied game.

Delta's Bryan Brown went 2 for 4 with a solo homer in the seventh that tied the game at 3-3. Vinnie Devencenzi, Evan Peters and Shull also had two hits each.

Delta plays Sierra, which beat San Mateo 6-5 later in the day to advance, again at 11 a.m. today at Feather River. Box Score

Delta hangs on in 12th

By The Record May 16, 2009

The Delta College baseball team took an early five-run lead in its first Northern California Super Regional game and then endured a nine-inning drought before scoring twice in the 12th to beat San Mateo 7-6 on Friday at Feather River College in Quincy.

The Mustangs pounced on Bulldogs starter John Austin with five runs in the top of the second to take an early lead. They gave up three runs in the third as Delta pitcher Zach DeValle's strong start headed south. San Mateo scored once in the fifth and eighth innings before Delta reliever Jared Schlehuber (7-1) came on to close. "Schlehuber threw the final 4 2/3 when they had all the momentum. He was the difference. He did really well," Delta coach Reed Peters said. "DeValle had a decent start and he got tired. We had to take him out."

Tied 5-5 going into the 12th, Delta scored its first run since the second inning when Vinnie Devencenzi singled, stole second and third, and made it home on an error. Garrett Yrigoyen added what turned out to be the deciding run with a double to drive in Stuart Burnett.

San Mateo cut the lead to 7-6 when O'Koyea Dickson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 12th, but the Mustangs held on for the win.

Delta will play Sierra at 1 p.m. today in Quincy. Box Score

Zach DeValle threw six scoreless innings and Brent Clapper, Chris Anklam and Andrew Gabriel all threw scoreless innings to preserve the shutout in relief. Stuart Burnett hit a 3 run homerun in the first as the Mustangs pounded out 12 hits. Daniel Fernandez, Brett Morgan and Jake Caton had multiple hits for the Mustangs.

Delta 10, San Jose City 3

The Mustangs got back on  track Sunday with a solid all around performance. Steve Barrington worked 5 innings for the win and Kevin Rogers and Chris Anklam threw well in relief. Evan Peters and Cody Scott paced the offense as the Mustangs pounded out 15 hits.

Mustangs return in style

Mark Godi: Record Correspondent January 28, 2009 6:00 AM

STOCKTON - Bryan Brown missed most of last season with a broken wrist.

That's why the sophomore couldn't stop smiling after hitting a three-run home run and a two-run triple as the Delta College baseball team opened the season with a 12-5 drubbing of West Valley on Tuesday at Nick Cecchetti Field.

The Vikings (0-1) were ranked sixth in Northern California and 14th statewide. The Mustangs were unranked.

"That is definitely how you want your first game back to go," said Brown, who played in just enough games as a freshman to miss being able to use his medical redshirt. "I've been looking forward to this for a while, and it kind of sets off the season."

Brown, who was used primarily as a designated hitter a year ago, opened this season in left field.

The Lincoln High graduate was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat, then turned a 3-2 Delta lead a comfortable 6-2 advantage in the bottom of the third inning when he pulled a 2-0 fastball over the batting cage in right field.

In the sixth, Brown highlighted a six-run rally by going the other way with his triple to the left-field wall, scoring Evan Peters and Jared Schlehuber.

"I was looking for fastballs," Brown said. "Those were the pitches I was hoping to get. I was looking for something I could drive."

In a return of his own, Steve Barrington was the top pitcher after transferring from Grossmont College. A sophomore who went to Lodi High and spelled starter Zach Devalle with West Valley threatening with two outs in the fourth inning.

Barrington got a strikeout to end the threat and went 31/3 innings, allowing one hit and two walks but no runs.

"I had my parents here, so it was kind of neat," Barrington said. "I was getting my pitches and pounding the zone. It pumped me up and gave the team a boost."

Devalle, a sophomore from St. Mary's, went 32/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He also hit two batters, walked one and struck out one.

Garrett Yrigoyen, a freshman from Sierra, started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run triple to left field. He went 2 for 4 with a walk and a strike out. Vinnie Devencenzi, a freshman from Weston Ranch, also went 2 for 4 with two RBI.

2009 Delta College Baseball Season Outlook

The Delta College Mustangs are beginning the second season under Head Coach Reed Peters and Assistants Denny Peterson, Matt Wilson and Damon Auchard. The 2009 Mustangs are looking to build off the accomplishments of last year which included:

* 20 win mark for the 1st time since 2002
* 1st playoff appearance since 1999
* Final RPI ranking of 16th, up from 31 the previous year.
* Team Batting Average of .300, up from .233.
* Team Fielding Percentage of .957
* 2 All Big 8 Conference Selections: Evan Peters, unanimous 1st team selection and All           Northern California Selection. Rick Cornu: 2nd Team All Big 8 Conference.

INEXPERIENCED: with only three starting position players and one starting pitcher returning, the Mustangs will need to mature quickly. 2009 will be extremely challenging for the Mustangs as this year’s schedule including 35 of the 44 games coming against top 20 teams.  The Big 8 Conference returns seven teams that reached the playoffs last year including the state champion Sierra College.

Pitchers:

Denny Peterson returns as pitching coach for the Mustangs. His pitching staff is very young. Returning from last year are lefthanders Zach DeValle and Chris Anklam, and right-hander Derrick Dederman. Newcomers include: right-handers Jared Schlehuber (transfer from Florida International), Mark Scott, BJ O’Bryan, Andrew Gabriel, Steve Barrington, Freddie Solari, Brent Clapper, and lefties Trae Lopez, Josh Rodriguez and Kevin Rogers. Projected starters are Zach DeValle, Jared Schlehuber, Steve Barrington, Trae Lopez, and Kevin Rogers. The bullpen should be balanced with Dederman most likely taking on the role of closer.

Catchers:

The catchers are coached by Matt Wilson. Matt comes to Delta from Sacramento State University where he coached the catchers for Head Coach Jon Smith. He will lead an experienced group that includes sophomores Aaron Rowley (started 39 games) and Cody Scott (transfer from Florida Community College @ Jacksonville).

Rowley is an excellent defensive catcher and Scott a physical threat at the plate. Both will see a lot of action.

Infielders:

Damon Auchard begins his first season  as the infield coach with the Mustangs, and should have some pretty good talent to work with. Coach “Auch” played at Delta before moving on to Oklahoma State. Getting a coach of his background is very exciting for us. First base will be anchored by sophomore Stuart Burnett. Burnett started in 38 games finishing with 3 HR’s and 25 rbi. Newcomer Vince Canale should also see time at first as well as in the outfield. The middle infield is very talented as well. Sophomore shortstop, Evan Peters, comes off a great season where he was a unanimous 1st team ALL Big 8 Selection hitting .376 with 4 HR’s and 28 rbi. Second base will be heavily contested between sophomores Thomas Shull, Daniel Fernandez and freshman Jake Caton. Garret Yrigoyen will start at third base and be backed up by Dustin Laughlin. Jared Schlehuber (Florida International University) will be a designated hitter and fill in on the corners.

Outfielders:

Coach Peters will have an inexperienced, but deep and versatile group of outfielders to work with. The only sophomores are Brett Morgan (15 starts) and Bryan Brown (10 starts). Morgan should compete for the starting centerfield spot and Brown, a powerful left-handed bat that will hit 4th and play leftfield and DH. Brown is coming of a season ending wrist injury the sidelined him early in the year. The rest of the outfield is balanced with several left-handed and right-handed hitters. Lincoln Clapper and Ryan Scornaienchi are quality left-handed hitters and Vinnie Devencenzi, Austin Baggs solid right-handed bats.

Head Coach Reed Peters is excited about this year’s club. While the team is young, the chemistry is good. Not sure of what our win total will be at the end of the year, but this is one of the most enjoyable teams to coach. If hard work pays off, we should be in the mix again.

Jared Schlehuber Signs with Oral Roberts University

Redshirt Freshman Pitcher/Infielder Jared Schlehuber has signed a Letter-of-Intent to play for Coach Rob Walton at Oral Roberts University. Coach Walton Coached the USA Team last Summer. Oral Roberts competes in the Summit League and has won the Conference 10 years in a row.

New Athletic Complex in Final Stages

Construction is in the final stages of completion for the Delta College Athletic Complex. Once completed, the college's athletic facilities will be among the nicest in the country. Currently the baseball complex and soccer facility are complete, and the football, softball and track complexes on schedule to be completed in the fall. All field surfaces other than soccer will be synthetic "Fieldturf." The track will be made of the state-of-the-art "Mondo" surface. Nick Cechetti field, home to the baseball team, was completed in June of 2007. The new complex features a "Fieldturf" synthetic surface, 80' major league dugouts, 300 stadium seats, 3 retractable batting tunnels with "Iron Mike" pitching machines, 36' scoreboard, and major league bullpens.

Jason Bartlett:

Bartlett picking up for sidelined Rays

09/03/2008 12:30 AM ET

By Brittany Ghiroli / MLB.com

Carlos Pena's six home runs and 19 RBIs in the past 20 games have been significant, but one of the club's most unheralded contributions has come from shortstop Jason Bartlett.

Predominantly the Rays' No. 9 batter, Bartlett went 2-for-4 out of the seven-hole on Tuesday and was 4-for-4 with his first home run of the season in Sunday's win over the Orioles.

Bartlett closed August with a .389 average, the best August average in Rays history and the second-best monthly average in the franchise history. Bartlett raised his season average 28 points during that stretch and is currently batting .281, his best mark since Opening Day.

"He's come a long way," Maddon said of Bartlett. "And here's the thing I'm looking at -- less fly balls. The home run [on Sunday] obviously is a fly ball, but if you watch his hits, [there are] a lot of hard ground balls between third and short. And then he's punching it to the right side."

Although Bartlett's homer on Sunday was his first long ball since Aug. 27, 2007, when he was a member of the Twins, Maddon isn't worried that the shortstop will get too starry-eyed.

"We've been on him about it," Maddon said. "That's the whole thing -- the home run can actually hurt [his swing], and we don't want that to impact him in a negative way. When he goes up there with that intent of line drives and ground balls, he's much better ... and he's been doing it for a few weeks now."

The Rays bats have assembled 10 or more hits in each of their past five games and will look to continue to swing a big stick -- and even the series -- in Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

Eddie Guardado:

Guardado grateful for return to Twins

08/26/2008 11:08 PM ET

By Kelly Thesier / MLB.com

SEATTLE -- Eddie Guardado was sitting in his hotel room in Kansas City early on Monday afternoon when the phone rang and Rangers manager Ron Washington was on the other end.

Immediately, Guardado said he knew his time with the Rangers had come to an end. But learning the news of exactly where he was headed in the trade came as a bit of a shock to the left-hander.

"I had no clue," Guardado said of going back to the Twins. "It still hasn't hit me yet. I started here and was here for 14 years. But I see a lot of new faces and I'm glad to be a part of it again."

Saying goodbye to his teammates in Texas wasn't easy for Guardado, but he hurried to Seattle as quickly as he could. He joined his new Twins teammates by the start of Monday night's game at Safeco Field.

It was a different feeling walking into the Twins' clubhouse this time around for Guardado. The coaching staff is the same as when he left, but most of the players have changed. In a clubhouse that is quite young, Guardado admitted that he feels like a veteran.

"I feel old, but I feel good," Guardado said with a laugh. "It's funny. I get here and a lot of young faces, no doubt. But I feel good physically, coming back from Tommy John surgery, and it's always good when somebody wants you in a pennant race. Hopefully, I stay healthy and help this team."

Guardado was already able to do that by pitching a scoreless eighth inning in Monday night's loss. Although the Twins weren't able to take advantage of Guardado's hold after Joe Nathan blew just his fourth save of the season in the ninth inning, manager Ron Gardenhire said he was pleased by what he saw from his former closer.

"Three up and three down is a really good thing," Gardenhire said. "I like that more than anything. His stuff, we know he's not overpowering, but he locates and he uses his changeup and uses his slider. He knows the hitters in this league too. He knows that team [Seattle] very well, the guys that he faced last night. He's seen them enough to know how he would attack them. So I think that's probably pretty good."

Guardado acknowledged that the loss on Monday was tough -- as is every loss in August and September when you are playing for something, he said. But that didn't keep Guardado from displaying his usual happy-go-lucky nature when talking to reporters as he discussed returning to the team that has always held a special place in his heart.

"Minnesota has always been good to me. That's where I started, and they gave me the opportunity first to play in the big leagues," he said. "I spent 11 years there and to be back now, I couldn't ask for anything more."

Phil Coke:

Coke impressing Yanks out of bullpen

09/16/2008 1:15 AM ET

By Samantha Newman / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Left-hander Phil Coke knew who he was in line to face when he was called out of the bullpen Monday night with the score tied.

After he retired the first White Sox batter he faced, Coke stood on the mound and watched Ken Griffey Jr. walk to the plate.

"I was sweating it pretty bad coming out of the bullpen," Coke said.

After his first fastball missed for a ball, Coke fought back to a 1-2 count as Griffey couldn't connect on his next two swings. And with back-to-back sliders, the lefty sent one of baseball's biggest names down swinging. Coke recorded a groundout in the following at-bat to end the frame, and when the Yankees took the lead later in the seventh inning, it was Coke who was in line for his first Major League win.

"I'm still waiting for it to hit me because I'm pretty sure it's going to be about as big as a truck," he said of his big league victory.

At the top of his locker sits a customized baseball to commemorate his first strikeout at Yankee Stadium, and he said the ball from his first win will join it soon. But while Coke is still getting used to the feeling of being part of the Yankees' clubhouse, his performances on the mound have showed that he fits right in.

Since his Major League debut Sept. 1, Coke has not allowed a run in six appearances. He has given up just two hits and recorded six strikeouts through eight innings pitched. And closer Mariano Rivera said he is impressed with the way the lefty attacks the zone and didn't hesitate when asked what stood out to him about Coke:

"His aggressiveness," Rivera said. "He goes after it no matter who it is, and that's the attitude you've got to have when you go onto the mound."

Coke had seen success in the Minor Leagues in both the starting and relieving roles, and so far his transition to the big leagues has been seamless.

"It's got to be huge for him," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's opened up a lot of eyes. He's shown that he is more than a one-dimensional pitcher. He started in the Minor Leagues, and he's also shown that he can be a reliever, too."

As for Coke, he has been pleasantly surprised with his Major League success and said whether he ends up in the starting rotation at some point next season or remains in the bullpen, he'll be happy to continue to show what he can do on the mound.

"I don't really go out there expecting anything," Coke said. "The only thing I expect of myself is to go out there and throw strikes as often as possible. If you can go out there and do that, then good things happen."
