Public Service Employment Disqualifiers
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (Government Code sections 1031(a) and 1031.5. Citizenship requirements for peace officers). (Government Code section 24103. Citizenship requirements for deputy sheriffs and deputy marshals). (Vehicle Code section 2267. Citizenship requirements for California Highway Patrol officers)
- Must be 18 years of age(Government Code section 1031(b). Minimum age of 18 years for peace officer employment)
- Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or California High School Proficiency. (Government Code section 1031(e)) or have attained a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited college or university
- A felony conviction under the laws of the United States and or unreported criminal activities. (Government Code section 1029(a) (1). Employment of convicted felons is prohibited)
- Failure to pass a fingerprint and criminal history check. (Government Code sections 1030 and 1031(c). Fingerprinting and search of local, state, and national files to reveal any criminal records).
- Failure to possess strong moral character(Government Code section 1031(d). Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation).
- Unsuccessful examination of physical, emotional, and mental conditions (Government Code section 1031(f))
- Unable to read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job of a peace officer as determined by the use of the POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery or other job-related tests of reading and writing ability.
- Use of injected narcotics, steroids or hallucinogens
- Addicted and or habitual drug or alcohol user
- Failure to file income tax returns
- Failure to register for the military draft (males)
- Financial irresponsibility
- Failure to disclose pertinent information in a personal history form.
- No valid California driver’s license and or having a poor driving history.
