Math / Science Learning Center SJDC
MSLC Mission Statement
The Math/Science Learning Center at San Joaquin Delta College offers tutorial services designed to enable students to successfully complete courses which will result in transfer, A.A., A.S., or certificate status and/or help them in career or self-improvement development. These services are offered through small group and/or one-on-one tutoring activities designed to develop effective, efficient, independent and self-directed learners.
The vision is to be accomplished by:
• Recruiting and encouraging students in all disciplines and skill levels to take advantage of the tutoring services.
• Recruiting and training tutors (those individuals who will be responsible for providing ancillary tutoring beyond that available through formal classroom instruction.)
• Gaining confidence and support of instructors in all disciplines so they will refer students for tutoring when they believe students would benefit from it.
• Developing intake strategies for effective matching of tutors and tutees.
• Developing ongoing and concluding evaluative tools for both tutors and tutees.
The Math/Science Learning Center has established goals for the tutee, the tutor, and the faculty of San Joaquin Delta College:
The Tutee will do the following:
• Learn and practice the basic study skills essential for successful college-level work; they include skills in reading comprehension, writing, listening, note-taking, problem-solving, test taking, etc.
• Demonstrate the ability to become efficient, effective, self-confident and self directed learners.
• See the Math/Science Learning Center as a place where students can have questions answered about course work and can learn the processes involved in achieving success in that course work.
• Improve their academic performance in the classes that students are taking.
The Tutors will be provided with the experience, information, and techniques they need to help others to learn. Through instruction and on-going training, the tutors will:
• Enhance their knowledge of subject content.
• Take the tutees through the steps of the learning process and develop additional study skills.
• Increase effectiveness in interpersonal communication.
• Increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation for people of diverse cultural orientation, values and behaviors.
• Practice skills and behaviors that they can add to their employment resume.
The Faculty will:
• Be provided with information about the services offered through the Math/Science Learning Center and will be encouraged to suggest that their students take advantage of them.
• Refer students who could benefit from tutorial services.
• Refer successful students to the Math/Science Learning Center to serve as tutors.
