The Need
Due to a large number of retiring teachers, growing school districts, and reduced class sizes, the demand for new math and science teachers is expected to be over 33,000 in the next ten years. California is not producing enough fully prepared math and science teachers to meet current and future needs and the percentage of under prepared science and mathematics teachers is much higher in low-performing and high minority schools where they are needed the absolute most. It is speculated that the shortage of fully prepared and qualified teachers in these subject areas is undermining California's competitive edge and threatening the California economy.
Our Goal
The goal of the Teacher Preparation Pipeline Program is to immediately address the impending math and science teacher shortage that faces our education system by identifying, recruiting, and retaining prospective math and science teachers and allowing them to gain early pedagogical experience through tutoring in these subjects and to set them on the shorter path to earning their teaching credential.
