The Teacher Preparation Pipeline Grant (TPPG) is funded by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. In direct response to the urgent need for more single subject credentialed teachers in Math and Science, the 2005 California Initiative on Math and Science gained the commitment of California State University and University of California campuses to double the number of graduates qualified each year to take the Single Subject CSET exam. In support of that effort, TPPG enables San Joaquin Delta College to improve the pathways for students preparing for transfer to four-year degree granting institutions. A recent Press Release from the Governor's office stated "that California’s current teacher shortage will be compounded as the state loses 100,000 more teachers over the next decade to retirement - fully one-third of the teacher workforce. In the next ten years, California’s schools will need over 33,000 new science and math teachers."
The purpose of the project, Choose Teaching as a Career, is to establish partnerships with local high schools, the San Joaquin County Office of Education and local four-year degree-granting institutions to enhance an existing teacher preparation pathway by enabling students to begin their post-secondary teacher preparation at the community college. At Delta, in addition to enrolling in general education transferable courses and CTE courses, participants will work as tutors in Math classes to boost content knowledge, gain further pedagogical experience and receive the financial assistance that is so often urgently needed.
The first phase of the project is to enroll students who will help us develop and enhance pathways for students planning to teach HS Math.
