ECE Pathway Steps:

  1. Appointment for an Orientation to Pathway
  2. Meet w/ Project counselor
  3. Develop Individualized Course of Study/SEP
  4. Engage in Fieldwork 5 hours a week for 10 weeks to gain understanding of need of math, science, and English/language arts on job
  5. Receive math and/or ELA tutoring as needed from participants in math and science pathways
  6. Complete AA/AS degree & Transfer to CSUS to complete BA/BS
  7. Continue pathway at four year to teach in the ECE field!

 

Degrees in Early Childhood Education

Certificate
Basic professional & industry-specific skills
Prepares individual for an entry-level career in a daycare facility or in a small childcare setting
Associates More extensive than certificate
Prepares for a wider range of career options and/or advancements
AA holders are often the lead teachers in daycare and preschool settings
Bachelors Requirement for a public school teacher & for a teacher's license
Most common entry level requirement
Focuses on classroom issues & pre-kindergarten through third grade instructional methods
Master's Focuses on specialized issues such as curriculum development or technology in school system
Develop practical & theoretical knowledge of childhood development & of pedagogy appropriate for very young children
Emphasis on development of communication skills for teacher-student & teacher-parent relationships
Usually a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.) w/ concentration in ECE but some schools offer a Master of Arts or Science degrees
Usually higher salaries offered with completion
PhD Careers in college or university administration & postsecondary education
Research-intensive, varies in time it takes to complete them (generally 3-5 years)
Research the way young children learn, advocate for changes in educational policy, assume leadership role in an educational institution or organization
Studies of: curriculum development, classroom methodology, administrative techniques, rudimentary child psychology & sociology

Careers in Early Childhood Education

Childcare Worker Preschool Teacher *Teacher, Elementary or Kindergarten Education Administrator

College Instructor

Variety of settings though usually a childcare setting. Help children learn basic concepts, primarily through play. Typically ranged from age 2-kindergarten. Introducing basic skills & concepts - colors, numbers, and letters. Primary method of learning through play. Teach skills in areas of science, math, language, & social studies. Employ a varitety of instructional methods & work w/ students of all backgrounds, races, & ethnicities. Oversee day-to-day operations of a preschool, childcare center or school. Oversee staff & curriculum, manage budgets, & ensure that their schools meet all educational standards set forth by their governing body. Instruct students pursuing education after high school. Teach courses of bachelor's degree candidates in early childhood education. Must stay current to technology & research in their field.
Min. High School Diploma (administrative positions; child development certificate or AA degree. AA, BA to better qualify for opportunities for advancement in a preschool center. States require public teachers to earn BA & a license in their state. Typically a Master's or PhD. Master's & related work or other academic experience.

Early Childhood Education at Sacramento State

From Child Development Major Handbook, 2008-2010

In the Child Development major, students can choose from one of five concentrations:

  1. EDCE (for preschool teaching and administration)
  2. Social & Community Settings (for working in non-profit, legal, social work, or counseling settings, to name a few)
  3. Elementary Pre-credential (to prepare for admission to a credential program)
  4. Integrated Pre-credential Subject Matter (CHSM) which prepares students for credential and for taking the CSET exam
  5. Individualized Concentration, which is for students who want to create their own focus of study

 

After a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Development there are many options.

Including but not limited to:

  1. Master of Arts in Child Development
    • Theory & Research
    • Applied & Community Settings
  2. Master of Science in Counseling
    • Career counseling, community counseling, marriage, family, and child counseling, vocational rehabilitation
  3. Master of Arts in Education
    • Behavioral sciences (gender equality), curriculum and Instruction, Educational Technology, Language and Literacy, Multicultural Educators in Nontraditional Settings, Teacher Leadership in Multicultural Education, School Psychology, and Special Education
  4. Teaching Credentials
    • Multiple Subjects (Elementary)
    • Etc.
