Teacher Credential Test Requirements

If you are interested in teaching in a Middle School or High School classroom in California you must receive a BA/BS and pass the CBEST as well as successfully complete the CSET.

 

CBEST - California Basic Education Skills Test

To teach in middle school or high school in the state of California all teachers must pass the CBEST.

Students are encouraged to take the CBEST after completing at least one year of college level English and one year of college level Math while still a student at Delta College. 

The purpose of the CBEST is to assess and verify acceptable proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics skills at the high school level. The CBEST includes sections in Math, Reading, and Writing. Once completed, you will not need to repeat this test. .

CSET - California Subject Examination for Teachers

Candidates applying for a Single Subject Teaching Credential (e.g. mathematics) may pass the CSET examination(s) as one method of satisfying the subject matter competence requirement. The purpose of this test is to assess competence in the various subjects taught in a self-contained classroom.

After completion of upper division courses at a four year college students will be advised and prepared for the best time to take the CSET.
