SICL Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

SICL (Stockton Institute for Continued Learning) is a member-run and member-governed organization for mature adults from the Stockton area. It offers learning and social programs in an information setting. SICL is run as a partnership with San Joaquin Delta College, and utilizes the college environment and resources as part of the learning experience.
Typical SICL members are concerned people from all walks of life, who are active, curious, and have the desire to pursue new interests and lifelong learning. Being a member offers you intellectual, social, and leadership opportunities to attend interesting classes and tours… all at a very reasonable cost! Members are also encouraged to volunteer to serve on a committee or become a board member.
Individual classes are developed from the suggestions of members and the availability of volunteer instructors, with several new classes usually offered each semester. Recent subjects have included music, art, computers, bridge, gardening, digital photography, money management, cooking, nutrition, games, and dancing. You can view descriptions of current and past courses at: https://docushare.deltacollege.edu/dsweb/View/Collection-10262.
No tests or grades are given. The only requirement is a desire for knowledge.
Where are the SICL classes held?
Most of the SICL classes are held at the San Joaquin Delta College campus in Stockton. Each class normally meets once a week. Classes are held Monday through Friday, during the spring and fall semesters.
SICL instructors are normally local residents with special knowledge in topics of general interest to SICL members. Instructors typically volunteer their time to support the SICL program.
Is there a cost for parking at Delta College?
Delta College does not allow free parking in any of the college’s parking lots. You can purchase a 1-day use ticket (current cost $1 per day) or a parking sticker for your car window that is valid during an entire school semester (current cost $22 per semester). SICL members may currently purchase through SICL a semester parking sticker for $11 (a savings of 50%), but this subsidy might not be available in the future. If you have a valid handicap sign for your car, you are allowed to park in any of the parking areas on campus. However, you must still purchase a parking permit or you will be ticketed and fined.
If I have a handicap placard, is it still necessary to purchase a parking permit?
Yes. Everyone must pay to park in the Delta College parking lots. The handicap placard allows the permit holder to park in the special handicapped designated parking spots. However, the campus police do not always enforce this, but you are taking a risk of receiving a parking ticket if you do not have the parking permit.
Must I purchase a parking permit for the current semester?
No. You can purchase a daily parking permit at the yellow box in each parking lot, for $1 per day. If you do not plan to park on campus more than 11 times a semester, buying a daily parking permit can be less expensive, but also less convenient.
SICL has an official registration day at the beginning of each semester. However, you may also join SICL at any time. Just download, complete and return the registration form found at:
https://docushare.deltacollege.edu/dsweb/View/Collection-10258
What is the cost to join SICL?
The current cost for membership in SICL is $25 per semester. In addition, SICL members are currently eligible to purchase a Delta College campus-wide parking permit through SICL for $11 (normal price $22 at the college bookstore). The optional group tours are priced individually, depending on the tour.
Is there a charge for the classes?
Current SICL members can attend as many classes as they wish, most at no additional cost. At times there might be an extra fee for an individual class, or for materials needed for the class.
What and when are the SICL tours?
SICL usually offers about five tours each semester. Only registered members of SICL are eligible to participate in the tours. The tours are very popular and reservations fill early. Some recent tour destinations have included museums, SF bay cruise, SF Flower & Garden Show, Winchester Mystery House, Sausalito, and spring gardens. You can view detailed descriptions of previous tours at: https://docushare.deltacollege.edu/dsweb/View/Collection-10259.
How do I sign up for one of the tours?
At this time, the first opportunity to register for a tour is on registration day, at the beginning of each semester. Only registered SICL members are eligible to sign up for the tours, on a first come, first serve basis. Members can still sign up for tours after registration day if space is available, until the tour is completely filled.
