Sociology Faculty
Dr. Thea Alvarado Thea Sweo Alvarado holds a B.A. in Sociology from UC Berkeley, an M.A. in Social Science with a concentration in Demographic and Social Analysis from UC Irvine, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from UC Davis. She teaches courses in Women's Studies, Race and Ethnicity, Criminology, Aging, Research Methods, Immigration, Multiculturalism, and Marriage and Family. Dr. Alvarado is a member of the Pacific Sociological Association as well as the California Sociological Association. A former community college student, she currently teaches Soc 1 A and SocSci 30 at Delta College. |
Dr. Rosalind Gottfried Rosalind received her M.A. and Ph.D., in sociology, from Brandeis University in Massachuetts and her B.A. in sociology, with a psychology minor from Rutgers University in New Jersey. She also has an M.A. in counseling from Webster University New Mexico. She has been teaching for more than thirty years, mostly at Community Colleges; she has been at SJDC since 1996. IN addition to teaching, she has worked as a counselor, CASA, pet therapist (with her standard poodle). She is the proud mother of two daughters she raised as a single parent. She teaches Introduction of Sociology, Social Problems, and has also taught Gender, Social Psychology, Family, and Race and Ethnicity. Discipline: Counseling, Psychology and Sociology |

| George Medina Adjunct Associate Professor Bio: A.A., Administration of Justice: San Joaquin Delta College 1993 B.A., Sociology, minor in Criminal Justice California State University, Stanislaus 1995 MSW, Masters in Social Work: California State University, Stanislaus 1997 I’m proud to say that I am a Delta College Alumni originally from Tracy, Ca. I joined the Army at 17 y/o, and was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga., W. Berlin, Germany & Ft. Lewis, WA. While in the military I traveled to France, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, & Canada. In 1991 I was injured during Ground Combat in Iraq. I was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge among other awards. After serving six years in the military, I came home to California, and applied for the Veterans Administration’s Vocational Re-Habilitation Program, graduating with an MSW. In 1997, I started working at Child Protection Services, Stanislaus County in 1997 and was subsequently promoted to CPS Supervisor in 2005. I started my teaching career in 2000 at Modesto Jr. College and then later at California State University at Stanislaus and San Joaquin Delta College, which I love and find rewarding. My Hobbies: Family, Boxing, Oakland Raiders, politics/news, Sociology, and taking care of my home/yard. Cathy Wong ![]() Adjunct Associate Professor Bio: B.A., California State University, Stanislaus M.A., California State University, Sacramento Ph.D., California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco Concentration in Transformative Learning and Social Change Cathy L. Wong, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology who considers herself “home grown.” She is an adoptee from Hong Kong, coming to the United State in 1961, to a family in Thornton, Ca. She earned her B.A. in Sociology with a concentration in Human Service and a minor in Gerontology from CSU Stanislaus, an M.A. in Sociology from CSU Sacramento, and her Doctorate in Transformative Learning and Social Change from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She is currently a full-time Lecturer at CSU Stanislaus and an Adjunct Professor at San Joaquin Delta College. Since the first time I have stepped into a classroom I have taught many classes; Introduction to Sociology and Social Problems are the main classes I have taught at SJDC. Some of the other classes I have taught include: The Family, Social Welfare Services, Sociology of Aging, Introduction to Gerontology, Sociology of Death and Dying, Sociology of Mental Health, Race and Ethnicity, Cross-Cultural Social Issues, Social Change, and Intergenerational Experiences. Professor Wong has presented numerous times at The Pacific Sociological Association conferences between 2005-present. Currently, she is engaged in two research projects; one in conjunction with Stanislaus Commission on Aging and the other with Tuolumne County’s Resource Network Services. Both are examining the aging communities. In Stanislaus County the focus is the Hispanic community and in Tuolumne County it is rural area seniors. Professor Wong also makes time to involve herself as an advisor for two campus clubs on CSUS’ campus: Sociology Club and Alpha Phi Omega. Both focus on community service and helping one person or family at a time to make a difference within the local community. |
Len C. Wynn-Summers, the youngest of 8 kids from Cincinnati, Ohio, has a B.A. in Sociology and B.S. in Social Work from Xavier University in Ohio. In addition, he has a M.A. in Quantitative Sociology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Len has conducted some unique research projects over the years, such as exploring social norms of elevator behavior and measuring altruistic behaviors of urban homeless populations by posing as a homeless person for 49 days. When Len is not teaching, he can be found playing tennis, hiking, and traveling with his fiancé, Carina. He has two, wonderful adult children, Natalie, a third-year college student at Saint Louis University, and Jarryd, a stock broker in Chicago, Illinois. Discipline: Sociology |
