Unit 6.1

For this assignment, I used all the Los Angeles and New York newspapers. I searched for the same topic for all of them: Chinese immigration.

This way I could compare and contrast. I found that the Historic New Your Times(1851-2003), but I only used the historic articles, came up with 100 articles.

I found that the search yielded anything with the words Chinese or Immigration. The few pertinent articles discussed the Chinese as laborers and referred to them as below them,

much ignorance by the writers and interviewers. In the Los Angeles Times, the search only yielded 36 articles, but as I expected, they were more pertinent to the topic.

Many articles discusses the abolition of Chinese immigrants to the states unless they were laborers, or in a loop hole under article 2, if they had documentation from the

Chinese government allowing them to be there as something other than laborers. With both of the historic newspapers, the writing appeared to me as informal and unprofessional,

because the standards and expectations were different. The writers would very obviously put their opinion in the articles. For the more modern articles, found in current

Los Angeles Times, yielded 193 results. These articles, before the year 2000, discussed appealing the Chinese Expulsion act and the different ways that immigrants are

illegally getting into the U.S.

I enjoyed searching the database and finding very old newspaper articles. They will be a valuable source of information for future history essays.

Other than the technical difficulties mentioned above, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and it was very easy to use.

Netiquette
I found the netiquette assignment to be kind of a review of what I have learned through experience. I took the test before reading anything and managed to get an 8/10

with the only questions I was not sure of to be the golden rule of netiquette and the forwarding of emails. With the amount of time I have spent online I guess most of

these rules just came to be known and a lot of them are just common sense about behaving respectfully and being nice toward others.
After I read the excerpts from the Netiquette book I got 100%.

I did not know that there were so many different protocols and forms that you had to go through to obtain and/or utilize a copyrighted material. There are plenty of rules and such, but it's pretty much expected. When you're talking about someone's original idea which might be their livelihood, it's expected that it would be protected so much.

I was not fully aware of all the stipulations when it comes to copyrighting. Especially when your an online instructor. There is a lot of rules to be aware of. Not only in getting permission to use certain design or reading material as well as music and recordings but also to get these things copyrighted. At work there is a term we all use it is called C.Y.A. it is short for " cover your a#%" or butt, another wards when it comes to copyrighted materials better safe than sorry.

At first I was under the impression that only material such as articles, books, phrases and the such were forms of copyrighted material. I had no ideal that there were so many other forms of material that could be used illegally and that needed to sought permission for. The rigorous steps that are involved are well worth it from a journalist or writer's standpoint, but for the average person, they usually do not take those types of things into consideration. I believe that now after reading the Tutorial, that I have more of a consideration for copyrighted material and that it is not something to take likely.

I did not know about all of the copyright infringements. There are som many copyright rules you need to know. Especially when you are an online instructor.

while taking the copyright tutorial test I found allot of use full information about copyright laws. By taking the test four times I was able to actually pass it. The copyright of joined authors really got me at first because the partnership has to be a signed contract rather than an oral agreement.

It was very informative to find out that there are so many rules and regulations to follow. I also realized I have violated copyright laws unknowingly until I read this. very good information I plan to share this website with others.

With so many different things that can be copyrighted it would be hard for an inventor not to infringe on any copyrights. Would be pretty expensive to hire a copyright lawyer to even look at what has or hasn't been copyrighted.

As I was reading the lessons from the Copyright Tutorial Crash Course, I've learned many things that I have never learned before. I've learned a lot about the Four Factors Fair Use Test and how to use it to figure out whether I'm using a copyright material in a fair way or if I need to ask permission from its author/owner. I've also learned about how to ask the author for permission and what to expect from his/her reply, and who to ask if the author/owner of the copy right material is not available. However, as I was taking the Copyright Tutorial Test, I did have trouble with the last question, #12. Hopefully, I am not alone with that problem. It took me some time to figure out which items could be in public domain, although I knew what "public domain" meant and kind of had an idea of what kinds of items would not be protected. Perhaps I should exercise myself in learning more about that one. Other than that, it's been a great experience and I've learned a lot that could save me from infringement and give respect to those who own the copyrighted materials.

I was aware of the copyrighting rules because I am in the work force were I create letters day to day, however I was not aware of all the rules behind copyrighting. Reading this information provided me with how you can easily get yourself in trouble by misusing someone else information, I especially enjoyed the audiovisual part of it because I was able to get good information and I didn’t have to read.

I have heard about copyrights when I was in high school. I learnt that you cannot make copies or use any ideas without the owner’s consent. I was also aware that many singers do get sued time after time for using someone else’s lyric. Therefore I wasn’t surprise when reading the website pertaining to copyrights. Though, what amuses me is that there is way around this law. There are actually ways to be able to use other people’s idea. I wouldn’t try to because there are just too many protocols to follow.

I enjoyed taking this netiquette quiz I learned a lot of new information. For example I did not know what flame meant in the internet world. I think this was a good start off because we all have an understanding on how to write good emails or responses. I was very impressed because I received 100% in the quiz.

This was my favorite because it is well written and gives the reader a personal feeling as to knowledge of the subject. Also, I liked that the structure and writing style of the

biography were easy to follow.

This was my first experience using the Gale Virtual Reference Library and I was amazed at how many useful results I found in response to my searches. I found the Encyclopedia of

American Immigration to be most helpful in my current phase of research for my project. It provides a great deal of basic knowledge on the subject. I am most interested in immigration

here in California but the information provided on immigration in other parts of the United States provides helpful information in gaining a holistic view on the topic.

Netiquette is a word I had never heard before. Reading about what it was, though, seemed familiar. It is just being courtious on the internet, like someone would be in person. It was good to

read because I had never heard of some of the words they used, such as "flaming." Although the things they said not to do I would never do, it was interesting to actually read the rules to

see what is expected from internet users. On the Netiquette Quiz I scored 100 %.

I honestly don't have a lot to say about my google experience. I have used some of these features before, and I get a lot of use out of the local, map and person-finding features. Other features I like...well, I prefer google's group list function to the more popular yahoo groups, as it's more reliable, and I like the way google groups messages in its archives. This feature is new, however, and I'm sure it will gain in popularity as awareness grows.

The most useful of the searching functions, other than the basic search, and the image search, would be the locations searching and mapping functions, in my opinion. They are something everyone can and will use at some point (or they'll use a similar service elsewhere). For students, Google Scholar is good to be aware of, though I admit I have used it but rarely.

An additional feature I think deserves more attention is google email, called Gmail. It is still in the Beta edition, so you have to be "invited" by an existing member, but it is the best and most reliable free email service on the web today.

I agree with you that most of the people will get a lot of use out of the local, map, and person-finding features.

I would like to comment on Google Scholar here. It is relatively new, but more and more academic libraries have linked their electronic resources through resolvers. Delta College library is working on getting the resolver and proxy server ready so that we could have students search in Google which will link to our subscription databases through authentication. At this point, you can find some free resources through Scholar, but most of often, you will find citations--not full text--since accessing to full-text subscription sources will require IDs and passwords from subscribing institutions. I do think it has a great potential for us, but at this point, it can not do what we want it to do for us yet.

I would also highly recommend students using advanced Web search and Directory search.

I have heard about the big space one would have in Gmail, but I have not used it yet. Are you using it, Sarah?

Exploring the different ways to search on Google was very interesting. I did searches using different words and tried it with and without quoatation marks and I used the Directory and also tried narrowing it down even more by clicking on the different links under the Directory (for ex: health) and it was really interesting to see how the number of results change just by the way you conduct your search. I didn't know until now that there were so many search features and I'm glad I got to test them out and learn all the different ways. This will definately help me out with future assignments.

I thought using Google's different search features was great! I really didn't know about all these different features. The first feature I thought was really cool was the calculator feature. The example was "half a cup in teaspoons". Do you know how many times I've been in the kitchen looking through cookbooks trying to find conversion information? Wow! I also think the book search and the scholar search are really going to help me with my research paper. The translate feature is going to help me and my co-workers. Sometimes we have to process library books in other languages. As far as I can see, it will only help us with Spanish, but that will be a big help. Right now we use a spanish-english dictionary to try to figure out what a book is about. With Google
translate we can do it right on the computer. The other languages we often see are Vietnamese, Cambodian, Urdu, Hmong....etc. I didn't see conversion of any of those languages to English. I'm glad we're learning about all these powerful search tools.

Right now, there are 34 languages in Google. Some of those need to be turned on from your Regional Options from the Control Panel. You may need your installation CD to have them activated.

From my experience of studying the translations from English to Chinese and Chinese into English, I have found some brilliant translations as well as errors. It is getting better and better, though. But, keep in mind that we can not rely 100% on its translation yet.

I use google for everything. one of my favorite features is when you search something that is applicable to froogle of local it will automatically post a link to that search at the top of the search results. I have used google for everything. i used it earlier today to find the number to order a pizza from a place in town. I have used google book search just for fun. and i do not even need a dictionary anymore because i can just search the word in google.

i discovered a few things going through the exercises that Dr. Wang put in her powerpoint. i didn't know that google offered so much. i use google for all my searching needs from lyrics to shoping. i even use google to find other websites to help me do things that google could have helped me with in the first place including translations. i don't exactly trust googles translations, but that's okay. it amazes me at how many shortcuts there are with punctuations. like i didn't know that you could go straight to tax forms with that shortcut that Dr. Wang showed us. i did, however, already know about the whole address thing, but i didn't know about the local thing. honestly, i had no clue what it did. this assignment has been a true enjoyment.

For the past two years or so I've had the downloadable Google toolbar on my web browser. I use it on a daily basis. I especially enjoy the drop-down menu that allows me to search specifically for images, for keyword matches in Google groups, or even Froogle - Google's sister web site where a consumer can search for a product to compare prices on any web site that has the item in stock.

The past few assignments have introduced me to the services offered by Google that I would not have otherwise known about. Travel Information views airport delays, weather conditions, and the status of any airline flight in the U.S. This feature will assist me tremendously in the summer with the many trips that family, friends, and myself will take. There is a 3D Earth browser that zooms from space to street level! When I inputed my address, you could actually see two cars which were parked in the driveway! I'll have a lot of fun exploring all of the other Google tools.

Glad you brought up Google Earth, which can be downloaded to your computer from Google-->More. Its satellite imaging is so clear that you can zoom in to see even people and dogs in your yard. The images, though, were taken a couple of years ago, and they do not seem to be updated very often. It is, after all, very expensive to have the satellite mapping done.

I just did an advanced Google workshop and would like to share some new Google features with you all. I'll upload my new Powerpoint presentation to Doc Sharing next Monday.

I sure did think that Dr. Wang's powerpoint was very informative. I have used google thousands of times before. I honestly never knew that there were so many short cuts out there. Before I started this assignment I thought it was rather silly, however I am very happy with all of the information that I was able to learn and will keep on using for a long time to come. I have found something great when using Google to search on your cell phone. I am so excited about it! You text your keywords to 46645 (GOOGL) and in about 60 seconds you receive a response. You can easily look up driving directions, people's phone numbers (if listed), area code or zip code look up, even translate a word or simple phrase into French, Spanish, German, Portugese, or Italian into or from English!

I was very surprised at how many search options there are on google.com. Google is my favorite search engine. I already have a personalized home page with them and the most current and advanced toolbar. The toolbar is probably my favorite thing that google offers. You can be anywhere on the web and search on just that page for something, have it translate that page to ANY language. Also you may type anything in and do a regular google search, an image search, "I'm feeling lucky" search, google groups search, search the news, or search froogle. I love google.com.

This powerpoint enlightened me on many Google features. The most surprising feature was the phone book. I'm not sure why I was surprise because now days cell phones have the internet as well.

Being in the medical field and a student this features were very helpful. The news is an important tool for me to search recent medical alerts or updates. For example, the SARS and West Nile Virus was on the news daily providing important information for the public to know. Unfortunately, I missed the news on a daily basis being busy or to tired to show it. This feature can allow me the have the important information the news provided written and have access at any time of the day. Also, the local map and people locating feature is important for the public to have access to especially if they are search for a family member.

Majority of student's main concern is finances. I found many site that provided grants, loans, or scholarships. My hopes of afford UC Davis seems much more realistic.

Than you for the powerpoint. It was well done and easy to follow and understand. I'm sure it took lots of time.

My search experience on Google was a knowledge into something beyond Yahoo. Yahoo is the only search engine I use because it was the only one I know of. Google offers more topics of interest than Yahoo which is more commercialize with its many pop up advertisements. Google is more structured for knowledge search than subliminal massages of buy buy buy. I look froward to using Google as a tool of finding information that seems to be more creditable in its content.

I found a lot of information using the different search features on google. To be honest I have used google in the past but I really only use it when I can't find something in one of my other search engines. After this assignment however I realize that google should probably be my "go to" search engine to begin with. I also learned how to do something on my computer that I have been trying to figure out...so that was a bonus!

I have used goggle many times in the past, but I never slowed down to realize how many functions it has. I was looking up the children's song five green and speckled frogs. I searched it on goggle, yahoo, and altavista. I wanted to get an audio clip so i put in the word download at the end, and I got the most results from goggle. I like goggle the best because it gives you the most accurate searches (well in my experiences it has). I really like the map and the definition features and i use them frequently.

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology
This site is so cool!!! I was very excited to find this database and search through it. There are several topics I am interested in and look forward to researching more in the future. I think that this will be a great resource to help me in obtaining my biological and crystaline material electron microscopy certificate and I finish my schooling.

Biography Resource Center
I think this is a great source of information for self-education. I am planning on using this to learn about the lives of famous people whom I am not very familiar with. The down side I found to this site was that John Wayne was not listed. He is my favorite actor and while I searched by name and category, I found nothing.

CountryWatch
I enjoyed looking through all of the information I found about China. Although I am already in the country I was very interested in learning new things that can help me throughout our adventures here. I can also use this database once we return to the states to research and plan for future trips.
