This course (LIBRY 3: Information
Competency) was developed based on Information Literacy
Competency Standards for Higher Educationfrom the Association of College
and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the proposed revision of Title
5 Regulations on Information Competency (Item 5, Attachment 2) from
the
Consultation Council of California Community Colleges. It is aimed at
preparing students to become information literate citizens of the 21st
century.
According to the national standards from ACRL, an
information literate person is capable of performing the following:
Determine the extent of
information needed
Access the needed information effectively
and efficiently
Evaluate information and its sources
critically
Incorporate selected information into
one's knowledge base
Use information effectively to accomplish
a specific purpose
Understand the economic, legal, and
social issues surrounding the use of information
Access and use information ethically and
legally
Information Competency is a
graduation requirement at California State University. LIBRY 3 is a
CSU-transferrable course, and it is currently going through the
articulation with the University of California.
