The ESL Assessment 
The ESL Assessment measures the student's mastery of the English language. There are four different kinds of problems: listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The student will also do a writing sample. 


ENGLISH 80 PROGRAM

Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels.

English 80 - English Language Development 
Prerequisites: None 

This course is a basic survival English class emphasizing oral production of language. Students are required to take a core curriculum assigned according to their respective level. 

English 86a, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 80.
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 


ENGLISH 81 PROGRAM

Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels.

English 81 - Basic English as a Second Language 
Prerequisites: Level I placement based on the CELSA, a writing sample, and an oral interview. 

This course is a continuation of the survival English course that introduces students to the basic structures of written language. 

English 86b, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 81. 
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 


ENGLISH 82 PROGRAM


Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels. 

English 82 - Introduction to English Language Development 
Prerequisites: Level I placement based on the CELSA, a writing sample, and an oral interview. 

This course is designed for students to work on pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence patterns, conversation practices, reading, and 
writing. 

English 86c, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 82.
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 


ENGLISH 83 PROGRAM


Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels. 

English 83 - Beginning English Language Development 
Prerequisites: Credit in English 82 or placement based on the CELSA, a writing sample, and an oral interview. 

This course is designed for students of all foreign backgrounds and abilities in English to work on such problems as pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence patterns, conversation practices, reading, and writing. 

English 86d, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 83.
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 
 

English 70/70a - Basic Writing Skills 
Prerequisites: None 

This course is designed for students needing skill development in writing sentences. Emphasis is placed on writing clearly and correctly for a given purpose. 

DV ED 87/87a- Survival Math (optional) 
Prerequisites: None 

Survival Math is designed to provide students with computational and Problem solving skills using whole numbers, decimals, fractions and percents. The practical skills in measurement and money management will also be covered. An extra emphasis will be placed on the vocabulary and correct language usage needed to express number concepts and ideas. 

DV ED 78i- Applied Math Lab (optional) 
Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in corresponding DvEd 86 Applied math lab is a developmental approach to the acquisition of basic math competencies. 

This laboratory provides each student with individualized diagnosis, prescription and instruction to acquire mastery of computational and problem solving skills.

Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels. 

English 84 - Intermediate English Language Development 
Prerequisites: Credit in English 83 or placement based on the CELSA, a writing sample, and an oral interview. 

English 84 is designed for students to work on pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence patterns, conversation practices, reading, and writing. 

English 86e, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 84.
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 
 

English 70/70b - Basic Writing Skills 
Prerequisites: Credit in English 70a 

This course is designed for students needing skill development in writing sentences and paragraphs Emphasis is placed on writing clearly and correctly for a given purpose. 
 

English 77a - Basic Reading Comprehension/VESL 
Prerequisites: Eligibility for English 84 

This is a course designed to increase the student's reading comprehension skills, including identification to topic, main ideas and supporting details. Three different populations are served in specific sections focusing on VESL, technical areas, or general education. 

English 76 - Vocabulary Study Skills 
Prerequisites: Eligibility for English 84 

This course is directed towards preparing VESL students for the world of work and covers occupation-general language, safety language, asking and answering work-related questions, explaining problems with work and machinery, informal job-related conversation, reporting on work done, understanding and giving instructions and making requests on the job, writing resumes, and business letters. 


ENGLISH 85 PROGRAM

Students are required to take the appropriate core curriculum assigned according to their skill levels. 

English 85 - Advanced English Language Development 
Prerequisites: Credit in English 84 or placement based on the CELSA, a writing sample, and an oral interview. 

English 85 is a two-part course in advanced ESL: a review of functional English Grammar and basic sentence patterns, including frequent practice in both written and spoken expression; and instruction in reading comprehension skills, including frequent practice in systematic reading and analysis. 

English 86f, English as a Second Language (ESL) Laboratory is to be taken concurrently with English 85.
This course is an individualized ESL laboratory. Audio-visual materials, tutoring, and small-group instruction are available to aid students in developing language proficiency. 

English 70/70c - Basic Writing Skills 
Prerequisites: Credit in English 70b 

This course is designed for students needing skill development in writing paragraphs Emphasis is placed on writing clearly and correctly for a given purpose. 

English 73a - Writing Laboratory 
Prerequisites: None 

This course provides individualized writing practice in the paragraph and short essay for students of English 70c. 
 

English 86 g, h, i and j
Prerequisites: None 
These courses are designed  to teach students to write functional English sentences.  In addition, they may be taken as individualized ESL Laboratory courses.
