Note from Gwen Camper, the Interpreter Coordinator: (ASL) (Text) |
| Information About Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services | |
About Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (more information...) • Students who are deaf/hard of hearing are assigned a notetaker, ASL interpreters, or CART Providers. • In most cases students needing this service are assigned interpreter support prior to the first week of school and instructors are most often notified before classes begin. • When speaking with a deaf/hard of hearing student in class, please address the student directly, not with the interpreter or notetaker. |
|
Obtaining Services • Complete an online application by going to www.deltacollege.edu. Be sure to print the last page and sign it. • Schedule an appointment with a DSPS counselor by calling (209) 954-5330. Bring your printed, signed application with you. • While meeting with a DSPS counselor a student file will be created for you. The counselor will schedule you for an assessment test. • You will return for a follow up appointment after your assessment test result are recorded to schedule classes. At that time, if you need interpreting/CART services, the counselor will request them through the Interpreter Coordinator. • The Interpreter Coordinator will notify you when to attend the student meeting to go over student reponsibilites and meet interpreters, CART Providers and other students. • If at any time you have questions or concerns about your services, please contact your DSPS counselor. |

ASL Interpreters (more information...) Interpreters are provided to help you communicate with your instructors, your counselor, and other students. The interpreter is hired to voice your communication to others and to interpret voice communication into sign language. The interpreter is NOT hired to act as an aide or a tutor, only to facilitate communication. |
|
Notetakers - Assistant Request Form (Text Version) Students can also use notetakers during the class. Notetakers are students in the same classroom who will be taking notes on carbon copied papers from verbal and written lectures and other information presented by the instructor that will be useful for the deaf/hard of hearing student. |
