Major Competency

The student will demonstrate self-advocacy skills and the ability to communicate his/her need for authorized academic accommodations to faculty and staff.

Dsps Activity

The student will meet with a DSPS counselor for an intake appointment.

The student and the DSPS counselor will determine appropriate academic accommodations and services to be utilized.

The conselor will stress the need for the student to be his/her own self-advocate and to set up an appointment to meet with the teacher during office hours as one way to this.

The student will initiate communication with the instructor and meet with the instructor to discuss accommodation needs.

Evaluation/Assessment

After the student initiates communication with the instructor the student will meet with the DSPS counselor to discuss how the student's needs were met.

If a problem arises with receiving the accommodation from the instructor the student may request the counselor's assistance to resolve the issue.

A record will be kept detailing the student's communication with the teacher as well as any contacts made between the counselor and the teacher.
