First Aid for Epileptic Seizures

  1. Notify campus police at 954-5000 or the Health / First Aid Unit at 954-5078.
  1. Remain calm.  Students will assume the same emotional reaction as the instructor.  The seizure is painless to the individual.
  1. Do not try to restrain the person.  There is nothing you can do to stop a seizure once it has begun.  It must run its course.
  1. Assist the person to the floor and lay the person flat on his/her abdomen or on side.  Clear the area around the individual so that he/she does not injure himself/herself on any hard or sharp objects.  Try not to interfere with movements in any way.
  1. Prevent aspiration by tilting head to the side.
  1. Do not attempt to put anything in the person's mouth.
  1. It is not generally necessary to call a doctor or ambulance unless the attack is followed almost immediately by another major seizure, or if the seizure lasts more than about ten minutes.
  1. When the seizure is over, let the person rest if he/she needs to.
  1. Do not try to revive with fluids, stimulants, fresh air, or walking
