| Guidelines for Students Using Interpreter Services | ||
Welcome to the Disabled Student Programs and Services Office (DSPS)! The following information should help you in knowing how to use interpreter services successfully. Interpreters are provided to help you communicate with your instructors, your counselor, and other students. The interpreter is hired to voice your communication to others and to interpret voice communication into sign language. The interpreter is NOT hired to act as an aide or a tutor, only to facilitate communication. |
Here are some guidelines for you to follow to continue receiving services: |
1. Meet the interpreter inside the classroom. For the rest of the semester meet the interpreter inside the classroom at your designated seat. |
2. If you are more than 15 minutes late to class, the interpreter will leave and go to the office. For a night class, the interpreter will wait one hour. If you do not show up this will result in an unexcused absence. If this happens three times, interpreter services will be suspended for that class. |
3. If you are sick, call DSPS at 954-5330, 8am to 5pm (Voice/TDD) or 954-5345, 24 hrs (Voice/CRS/VRS only), at least one hour before your class meets to tell us. If your class is in the evening, contact DSPS before 5:00 P.M. If you get an answering machine please leave a message through CRS/VRS. If you are absent and do not call DSPS before class meets, you will receive an unexcused absence. If this happens three times interpreter services will be suspended until you meet with your DSPS counselor. |
4. If the interpreter does not show up, report to DSPS, after waiting 10 minutes, to get an available interpreter or a tape recorder. If you have a night class please call the office. |
5. Please do not have private conversations with the interpreter during class. This compromises the interpreter's role and puts her or him in the awkward position of deciding whether to voice your comments. |
6. During class, if the instructor is speaking too fast, someone mumbles, or several people talk at the same time, you can and should ask the instructor to repeat the information. |
7. If you need a notetaker, we will assist you with arranging an in-class volunteer notetaker or, if necessary, employ someone to assist you. Contact DSPS if you need this service. |
8. Participate in class. The interpreter is hired to sign AND voice for you. If you need an interpreter for an assignment outside your regular class time please notify the Interpreter/Coordinator at least five days before the event. |
9. If you have a problem and need assistance, you (not the interpreter) need to come to DSPS immediately. |
