Guidelines for Students Using CART Providers

Welcome to the Disabled Student Programs and Services Office (DSPS)! The following information should help you in knowing how to use CART Provider services. CART services are provided to help you communicate with your instructors, your counselor, and other students. CART Providers are hired to provide a complete translation of all spoken words and environment sounds and uses a steno machine, notebook computer, and realtime software to render instant speech-to-text translation on a computer monitor or other display for the benefit of an individual. The CART Provider is NOT to act as an aide or a tutor, only to facilitate communication.

Here are some guidelines for you to follow to continue receiving services:

1. Meet the CART Provider inside the classroom for the first scheduled class meeting. For the rest of the semester meet the interpreter inside the classroom at your designated seat.

2. If you are more than 15 minutes late to class, the CART Provider will leave. For a night class, the CART Provider will wait one hour. If you do not show up this will result in an unexcused absence. If this happens three times, CART services will be discontinued for that class. Please call DSPS if you know you will be late so a message can be given to the CART Provider to wait longer if necessary.

3. If you are sick, call DSPS at 954-5330, 8am to 5pm (Voice/TDD/VRS) or 954-5345, 24 hrs (Voice/CRS/VRS only), at least one hour before your class meets to tell us. If your class is in the evening, contact DSPS before 5:00 P.M. If you get an answering machine please leave a message through CRS/VRS.

4. If you are absent and do not call DSPS before class, you will get an unexcused absence. If this happens three times CART services will be stopped until you meet with your DSPS counselor.

5. If the CART Provider does not show up, report to DSPS, after waiting 10 minutes, to ask for an available CART Provider or a tape recorder. If you have a night class please call the office.

6. Please do not have private conversations with the interpreter during class. This compromises the CART Provider's role and puts her or him in the awkward position of deciding whether to voice your comments.

7. During class, if the instructor is speaking too fast, someone mumbles, or several people talk at the same time, you can and should ask the instructor to repeat the information.

8. You may pick up your class transcript in DSPS. Transcripts will be ready the next day by 5 p.m. If you have a night class please make arrangements with the CART Provider. If you do not want transcripts please inform the CART Provider. You CANNOT share your transcripts with anyone.

9. Participate in class. The CART Provider is hired to provide a complete translation of all spoken words and environment sounds, using a steno machine, notebook computer, and realtime software to render instant speech-to-text translation on a computer monitor or other display for the student. If you need a CART Provider for an assignment outside your regular class time please notify the Interpreter/Coordinator at least five days before the event.

10. If you have a problem and need assistance, you (not the CART Provider) need to come to DSPS immediately.
