Captioners Handbook:

Discretion and Maintain Professional Standards

Discretion

Captioners shall accept assignments using discretion with regard to skill, setting, and the consumers involved.

Captioners should only accept assignments for which they are qualified. However, if a shortage exists and the only available Captioner does not possess the necessary skills for a particular assignment, this should be explained to the student. The student can then decide if the Captioner services are needed regardless of the skill level.

Certain situations may prove uncomfortable for some Captioners due to religious, political, racial or sexual differences. Therefore, a captioner should use discretion in regards to accepting such assignments. If a captioner has any concerns they should contact the Interpreter Coordinator.

Maintain Professional Standards

A captioner shall function in a manner appropriate to the situation, and always conduct himself/herself in a manner befitting a professional. A captioner should never counsel, advise and/or interject personal opinions. Their only function is to facilitate communication. Captioners should strive to further their knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, classes and professional meetings.
